Etymology 1

    Kanji in this term
    かい
    Grade: 2

    Hyōgai
    on'yomi
    Alternative spelling
    海狸 (kyūjitai)

Probably coined in Japan of Middle Chinese-derived elements. First attested in Japanese in 1884.[1]

The beaver is not native to Japan, so this word would have had to be coined (or repurposed) relatively recently.

      たぬき > だぬき

      Alternative spelling
      海狸 (kyūjitai)

Compound of (umi, sea, ocean) +‎ (tanuki, tanuki or raccoon dog). The tanuki changes to danuki as an instance of rendaku (連濁).[3]

Date of first attestation is currently unclear. Considering that the native range of the beaver does not include Japan, the umidanuki reading may well also be from the 1880s.
