Verb
edit復旦
Etymology 2
editThe name of the university was chosen by its founder Ma Xiangbo in 1905 after he left Aurora Academy (震旦 (Zhèndàn)). It serves as a reminder of the old institution while also carrying the meaning of "reviving China" (復興中華).
The phrase 復旦 ultimately derives from the Song of Auspicious Clouds (《卿雲歌》) recorded in the Shangshu Dazhuan (《尚書大傳》)[1]:
- 日月光華,旦復旦兮。 [Pre-Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: Song of Auspicious Clouds (《卿雲歌》), in Shangshu Dazhuan (《尚書大傳》)
- Rìyuè guānghuá, dàn fù dàn xī. [Pinyin]
- The sun and moon shine brightly; dawn returns upon dawn.
日月光华,旦复旦兮。 [Pre-Classical Chinese, simp.]
