From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰedos (rump, butt), from *ǵʰed- (to defecate) + *-os (suffix creating action nouns or result nouns from verbs, sometimes also agent nouns from intransitive verbs (see Stüber 2002)), with semantic shift: shitterrump, butttail. Compare Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬛𐬀𐬵 m (zadah, buttocks) and Proto-Slavic *zadъ (rump) retaining the older meaning.
