User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
This is a one time notice and can't be unsubscribed from. Delivered by: MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:02, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
FAR for Belgrade
I have nominated Belgrade for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. Balkan Latinity WikiProject
Hello, I've been thinking for a while of an idea for a new and certainly needed WikiProject. The Aromanians/Vlachs, Megleno-Romanians/Meglenites and Istro-Romanians/Ćiribirci are poorly known peoples in the Balkans, the only ones that are Romance-speaking apart of the Romanians. Tagging pages related to these with WikiProject templates can turn problematic, see this talk page for example , saturated with 7 different templates. I was thus thinking that giving them their own WikiProject could increase organization on Wikipedia about info on these peoples and increase their representation in the project, perhaps even attracting members of these groups into working at Wikipedia. The project could be split into three task forces for each of the three.
If you're interested, please ping me here or message me on my talk page. Expressing your interest in the existence of such a project is enough, you will not be compromised or pressured into working in a topic area you might lose interest to soon. After (if) I recruit enough support, I will start a formal proposal and ping you there. Regards, Super Ψ Dro 20:56, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
Todor Vojinović - references need checking
The article Todor Vojinović, about a 18th/19th-century voivode, is currently waiting for a review. It contains references to scholarly sources (such as ISBN 978-86-87479-05-0 - scribd link) which appear on-topic. However, I cannot read Serbian, and therefore the article could be a total hoax and I would not be able to detect it.
Can someone check that source for the basic details (i.e. that Todor Vojinović existed, took part in the First Serbian Uprising, and was hanged in 1813)? If all that matches I’m going to assume it’s OK and mark it as reviewed. (Also, if possible, provide page numbers / exact quotes and make nice inline refs, but I understand that’s quite a bit harder.) Help on Eastern European languages
Hello!
Our of boredom, I am trying to identify the languages of inscriptions on a fountain located in central Budapest. I could easily identify some languages such as Hebrew, Armenian, Russian, English, French, Spanish etc. but I have trouble with some, mostly Slavic, languages which I do not speak myself. I guess that they must include Czech (or Slovak), Slovene, Croatian/Serbian/Bosniak, Macedonian, Bulgarian and/or maybe others.
Translations of 'The place is ours
':
- Trg je naš / Площадьт е наш (pretty sure that's Bulgarian) / Naš trg / Nas trg / [unreadable] naše je námestie
Translations of 'Non potable water
':
- Водата не е за пиене / Voda ni pitna / Непитна вода / Nepitná voda / Nepitka voda / Voda nije za piće
Translations of 'Open lawn
':
- Ходенето по тревата е разрешено / Dozvoljeno je gaziti (ǧaziti?) po travi / Dozvoljeno gaženje trave
I also do not manage to identify the language in 3 other inscriptions for which glossaries easily available online did not help. Could it be Romani?
- Náj lasó ráji / Ámáro szi o placo / Pécsár saj ustarén
Is anyone here able to tell which is which? Note that many inscriptions (such as in French and Greek) have spelling mistakes and inconsistent respect of diacritics.

Hello, WikiProject,
I just postponed deleting this stale draft and thought maybe editors here could make use of it, either by improving the draft and submitting it for review or using the content in some other way. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 04:26, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
@Liz: - I can certainly edit it after the weekend. My question is, since this article is related to this list of Serbian historians, I am unsure as to what needs to be edited considering this is just a list of Serbian historians. Please, advise. Hey guys,
Can someone, please, help me with this draft ? I have asked @Greenman: few days ago of what I need to do but I did not receive a clear answer. Can one of you look into this and help me get this resubmitted and approved by English Wikipedia ?
Thanks !

Питање
Поздрав. Управо сам се уписао у групу едитора. Имам питање везано за чланак Talk:Great Migrations of the Serbs , BbBgSr (talk) 21:05, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Bbbgsr: Hi! This is English Wikipedia, so we use English language here (see WP:ENGLISHPLEASE). Also, there is no such thing as article ownership ("власништво") here. Every article belongs to the entire Wikipedia community (see WP:OWNERSHIP). What you did is to remove a whole section of text that is referenced to WP:reliable sources just because you don't agree with it. That is not how Wikipedia collaboration works, and of course your edits were reverted. Instead, you should use the talk page to start a discussion and try to reach WP:consensus to improve the page. In the talk page, you should explain why you think the text is problematic. If you think the text is not neutral and one side is favored more, maybe you can provide some reliable sources that represent the different point of views. I see that you started a discussion on the talk page, but you are doing it the wrong way. You are demanding from other editors to explain why the content should be there'. Instead, you should try to explain why it shouldn't be there. Remember, if the longstanding content is properly sourced, the burden is on you to explain why it should be removed. Project-independent quality assessments
Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Battle of Tahtalu
Hi, Talk:Battle of Tahtalu 1458
There is a debate on the talk page. Do you have Serbian history sources about the events of that period? Turkish user claim 50,000 Hungarian army led by the 14 years old king Matthias of Hungary attacked Tahtalu (I do not know where) deep in Serbia and lost against Mehmed. Hungarian sources does not know at all about this. The Turkish user provided 5 Turkish sources, only 1 out of 5 claim Matthias was there, also all 5 Turkish sources write only 1 sentence about this battle (I do not think this deserve a separate article), which seems is a raiding border conflict story when I read all sources. Hungarian sources say Matthias went to south gathering a big army, stayed at Belgrade but later went home and he did not want provokate any Ottoman attack that is why he did not recapture Golubac. help reaching out to SrpskiAnonimac
As described at User talk:SrpskiAnonimac, I've had to resort to blocking this person for failure to communicate. Apparently, they don't actually speak English, and seem to have stopped following their user page years ago (!). This probably means they don't know how to go through the block appeal procedure, either. Since this editor does seem to have contributed a significant amount of edits, I'm wondering if anyone could try to reach out to them, possibly through some sort of a more local forum, where they might not be ignoring messages, and try to figure things out. Thanks in advance. --Joy (talk) 14:08, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Dragan Stanojević (Draft:Dragan Stanojević and sr:Драган Станојевић) is a member of the Serbian parliament, but the English draft isn't very long or well-referenced, and the Serbian article might have been written by one of his supporters. Since a members of a national parliament is considered automatically notable, I would like to see the English draft improved so that it can be moved to article space, but just translating the full text of the Serbian article won't be enough because it doesn't have enough references and seems not to be neutral. Please consider improving both the English draft and Serbian article so that they are neutral and adequately referenced. The Serbian article has been tagged as a beginner's article that might be deleted or moved to draft. Eastmain (talk • contribs) 05:24, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.
Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and climb the leaderboard. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.
Serbia is listed as a developing country for the purposes of this contest and articles related to it are eligible to be submitted for points, so I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

Concern Regarding Removal of Official Minority Names in Vojvodina Articles
I want to bring to your attention recent attempts to remove all official minority language names from the infoboxes of cities and regions in Vojvodina, including Novi Sad, Vršac, Sombor, and Šid... This goes against Wikipedia consensus, as established in the 2015 Request for Comment (RfC) on Minority languages in geographical articles, which confirmed that co-official names should be included when supported by reliable sources (WP:RS, WP:VER). Further discussion at Template talk:Infobox settlement reaffirmed that the native_name field is the appropriate place for such names. The involved editor in a newcomer and our attempt at discussion is HERE. Since it is a new user we should both expect some initial lack of familiarity and tolerate it, but also be careful about potential trolling. I believe WikiProject Serbia is a natural first stop at which to ask for assistance with this situation and I hope you can take some time to assist us with this situation.--MirkoS18 (talk) 09:17, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

- Thank you very much! I wanted to highlight the situation here to avoid any misunderstanding and to ask for a third party opinion (since I am generally inclined to include "minority/marginalized" contents - so potentially somewhat unconsciously biased). I was not entirely sure if this is just a new editor (where it is certainly good to show some leniency and tolerance towards well meaning newcomers) or potentially troll account. Thank you for reverting some of the more recent changes and time invested to deal with this issue.--MirkoS18 (talk) 12:17, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

Minimum content to be added to each article just to ensure that they're over a stub, though longer expansions also welcome. - "што е Србинъ католичке вере" translates to "a Serb of Catholic religion". "Онъ е за кратко време свога бавлѣня у Србии, обште уважениѣ и потованѣ стекао" translated to "He has in a short period during his work in Serbian, obtained appreciation and respect". Both are located in the second paragraph under "Новости изъ Београда / News from Belgrade". I don't think it's worth the inclusion in the article unless this can be covered in other reliable sources. The article Draginja Vlasic has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Tagged as Unreferenced for 13 years. Tagged for Notability concerns also for 13 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate; the Serbian language article has one reference and an external link.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Evaluation of newly added text in Serb uprising of 1848-1849 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) article
Hello everybody, can someone who is an expert on topic evaluate recently added big chunk of text in Serb uprising of 1848-1849 [], I already found some issues regarding false linking (you can check my talk page, talk page of the article and even teahouse) and removed parts of it [] however there are more issues regarding the style of writing i.e I couldn't find any nation called the Serbian Servians in international scholarship in which this editor is referring to so maybe can someone check it. Discussion about WikiProject banner templates
For WikiProjects that participate in rating articles, the banners for talk pages usually say something like:
- "This article has been rated as Low-importance on the importance scale."
There is a proposal to change the default wording on the banners to say "priority" instead of "importance". This could affect the template for your group. Please join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council#Proposal to update wording on WikiProject banners. Serbian Cyrillic "romanized"
A large number of articles on Serbia-related topics use the English translation of a name, and in brackets put the {{langx}} template. This then reads as
Nikola Tesla Airport (Serbian: Аеродром Никола Тесла, romanized: Aerodrom Nikola Tesla)
I recently heard the argument that this is incorrect, because Serbian Latin isn't "romanized" anything, the Serbian language is equally written in both. I completely agree — this isn't Chinese, where an unfamiliar alphabet has to be transliterated into English, we have a Latin alphabet that we use.
I propose that we somehow adopt an official stance that Serbian names should be rendered like this instead:
Nikola Tesla Airport (Аеродром Никола Тесла/Aerodrom Nikola Tesla)
Does anyone have any issues with this? If no, is there any practical way to formalise this? JustARandomSquid (talk) 09:49, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Pinging @FkpCascais, because I found out about this from them, but they appear to be on a protracted wikibreak at the moment, so I don't expect a reply. JustARandomSquid (talk) 09:54, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- We've had numerous discussions about this at e.g. Talk:Romanization of Serbian and Template talk:Lang-sr-Cyrl. The default langx template doesn't work well here, lang-x2 was made for this purpose instead, but the default code path in langx still works for the sake of compatibility, yet produces that phrasing that can be very odd in context.
- Just edit the articles to use the latter by using the convenient wrappers {{lang-sr-Cyrl-Latn}}, {{lang-sr-Latn-Cyrl}}, etc. --Joy (talk) 13:09, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- BTW a while back, another editor produced a list of all langx/sr-using articles that could be fixed this way. --Joy (talk) 13:13, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Amazing, thank you! JustARandomSquid (talk) 13:17, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Makes sense. But wouldn’t it be like this instead?:
Nikola Tesla Airport (Serbian: Аеродром Никола Тесла, Aerodrom Nikola Tesla)
- There is {{<lang-sr-Cyrl-Latn>}} (Cyrillic first), {{<lang-sr-Latn-Cyrl>}} (Latin first).
- But I would assume Cyrillic first would be the version as I believe Cyrillic is the primary written language set in Serbian? Or more common than Latin script? OyMosby (talk) 15:14, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Cyrillic should probably be first. I wouldn't say it's more common, but it's considered more official, yes. JustARandomSquid (talk) 15:39, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Both scripts are used in Serbia, but Cyrillic is AFAIK the official one. Therefore, yes, it should be listed first. Vacant0 (talk • contribs) 16:20, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Would it be ridiculous to go through trying to change these? I'll certainly make sure to remove the langx templates where I see them, but is the amount of work worth it? JustARandomSquid (talk) 16:35, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not really opposed to this. If others agree with such change, then there should be no problem. I can go through articles I've contributed to. Vacant0 (talk • contribs) 16:57, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, because this still is the English Wikipedia, where the average English reader typically doesn't care about the order of two foreign strings. Let's not invent busywork for editors. --Joy (talk) 19:28, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- The I assume you answered 'yes' to the first question, but yeah, I wouldn't want to go manually changing everything. I'll change it when I come across it, because I 'romanised' is misleading, but there's not much point it mass editing every Serbia related article to fix it.
- P.S. the issue isn't about the order, I think everyone agrees Cyrillic should go first, it's the langx template that reads 'romanized'. But yeah. JustARandomSquid (talk) 19:47, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- I'm just saying if you encounter Latin then Cyrillic in an article, and wrap that in {{lang-sr-Latn-Cyrl}} without changing the order, that is fine. --Joy (talk) 20:38, 11 December 2025 (UTC)

Categorising Serbian settlements
I want to work on Serbian villages, and one issue I have is that the categories are a mess, even when correctly categorised (and there's a lot that are just randomly placed somewhere or uncategorised). For expample, we have Category:Populated places in Vojvodina, which contains Category:Populated places in North Banat District. This has some, but not all, settlements directly in the category. (It would be 50 settlements total if they were all directly in there, is that too much?) This is further complicated by eponymous categories — Ada, Serbia and Category:Ada, Serbia, which contains stuff about Ada, but also a listing of villages in the Ada municipality, of which there's overlap between this category and the District one. So, if anyone who knows categories reads this, what do we do? Should all the articles for a District be in the District category? Should the categories like Category:Ada, Serbia be renamed to Category:Ada Municipality, Serbia? Maybe there should be another layer (Category:Populated places in North Banat District --> Category:Populated places in Ada Municipality --> Category:Ada, Serbia, but that what would be left in the last category?)? No idea how to standardise this. JustARandomSquid (talk) 13:55, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- 50 is not too much by default. Of course, if there is a category for a municipality, then those villages should be sub-categorized there instead. Cf. WP:SUBCAT.
- With regard to the name of the Ada category, if there's no reason to deviate from the main space name, it shouldn't be done, otherwise it's a WP:C2D issue. In other words, if the Ada, Serbia article describes both the town and its municipality, which it does, then its category can contain elements of both. It's unlikely readers would be surprised by that. --Joy (talk) 14:42, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- So you'd go with Populated places in [region] ---> populated places in [district] ---> [place/municipality name] ---> and the list of villages goes here? One wrinkle is that not all articles on settlements that have their own categories and eponymous municipalities unambiguously describe both the settlement and the municipality, like Ada, Serbia or Crna Trava do, especially the ones for larger cities. Is Bor, Serbia#Settlements enough to say that the article about Bor, Serbia also describes the municipality? Also, if a "Populated places in [district]" category only contains subcategories for the largest municipalities, might someone think that those were the only settlements in the district? JustARandomSquid (talk) 17:57, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, and if a subcategory doesn't exist then those parts stay at the closest existing level. Categories, like lists, can be incomplete. This is considered normal, cf. WP:Wikipedia is a work in progress --Joy (talk) 20:42, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
Yes,
— sorry, to which part? JustARandomSquid (talk) 20:58, 28 January 2026 (UTC)- Yes to the first two questions. To elaborate a bit more, the only reason to deviate would be if someone actually wrote an article about e.g. Bor municipality and wanted to also make a category for that. I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing that, however, because I've observed in several practical examples in Montenegro that the municipality article ends up badly linked and with less readership that way. --Joy (talk) 21:05, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

Dear WikiProject Serbia members, the article for Paja Jovanović's famous painting, Decorating of the Bride, currently lacks an image of the painting itself. Translation help needed for bilingual welcome template
Courtesy link: Template:Welcome-foreign/Serbian
Hello. Can you help verify a brief, English-to-Serbian translation in a welcome template?
Template:Welcome-foreign is a bilingual welcome template used to welcome new users who have written content in some other language besides English. The template welcomes them first in English, then in their own language, as long as it is one of the three dozen languages it can handle. New languages are easily added. I just added support for Serbian, but I don't know Serbian so I used automatic translation to create Template:Welcome-foreign/Serbian from the original at Template:Welcome-foreign/English. I'd appreciate it if a native Serbian speaker could verify or improve the translation. Feel free to edit it directly, or paste a better translation below, if you prefer not to edit a template. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 00:54, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
- Oh, by the way, if you speak Croatian (or Bosnian, Macedonian, etc.) we need those translated as well; see Template:Welcome-foreign#Languages, subsection #Adding a new language. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 01:07, 9 February 2026 (UTC)

Should we create an article about the Student List? I'm not sure if there is enough coverage to satisfy WP:GNG as the list does not exist yet. I've added what I could in the Next Serbian parliamentary election article. Vacant0 (talk • contribs) 13:55, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
- This one's interesting, because I personally think it is notable, but that there's not much point making a standalone article about it. It's possible that this is irrespective of whether the list actually exists or not, because it'll presumably only be on the ballot for the next election, and it's realistically not a political party per se, it's just a list of people that probably won't have much in the way of political activities outside of that election, so the topic would best be covered in the context of that election. Also, if the article was created, there would probably be a mess a la Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ćaci u školu to deal with. Just my two cents. JustARandomSquid (talk) 15:17, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think it's best to wait until the election comes, considering that we'll have more information about the electoral list. To be honest, I don't know whether Ćaci u školu is notable. I think that the term ćaci is, but I'm unsure about the graffiti itself. Vacant0 (talk • contribs) 15:40, 5 April 2026 (UTC)

- Very interesting and bold move from Wikimedia. Some of these editors were also on the English Wikipedia, though their main hub was the Serbian Wikipedia, of course. One of the users left a presumably AI-generated GA review on one of my articles, though they denied it was AI-generated (see here). Still can't tell why were they exactly banned, we can only guess. But yeah, this seems to me like a bit of a WP:FRAMBAN situation, where the WMF probably isn't malicious, but perhaps a bit misguided or overreacting, and they end up side-stepping the community.
