This course helps ground students in the fundamentals of SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION--communication among scientists--and SCIENCE COMMUNICATION, dialogue involving scientists and audiences of laypeople; e.g, political representatives, firefighters, nurses, parents of young children. This UT Dallas course guides students in reading, writing, speaking, and editing science. This Spring 2026 semester, the course theme is SLEEP--that is, research on the subjects of sleep and dreaming.
In the WikiEdu component of Scientific Communication, class members expand and improve Wikipedia entries on science subjects that are meaningful to them, preferably having something to do with sleep.
Wikipedia recently turned 25 years old. According to University of Albany political philosopher P.D. Magnus, Wiki's past success built on several factors: [Wiki's] community, its firm editing policies, the ability to review a page’s entire history and the noncommercial nature of the site. --Meghan Bartels, Scientific American, 1/15/2025 https://www.yahoo.com/news/

Competition and slop spillover from Large Language Models currently threaten to make Wikipedia seem less relevant, at least to the general public.
By working to enhance the quality of Wikipedia's entry, class members can help ensure its relevance.
