Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/South Africa
| Points of interest related to South Africa on Wikipedia: Outline – History – Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Cleanup – Stubs – Assessment – Style |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion and merging of articles related to South Africa. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|South Africa|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to South Africa. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Africa.

A non-notable community library. Sources, when they discuss the library at all, mention it in passing, or refer to a recent roof collapse - an incident that could have happened to any building. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:00, 23 August 2026 (UTC)

- Redirect to City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services per WP:ATD. It is a branch in this wider city library system and is listed there. There is about a page of coverage on the Parkhurst Library in Kennedy, R. F. (1970). The Heart of a City: A History of the Johannesburg Public Library. Juta & Co. p. 353. It's possible with another sources like this that it would pass WP:GNG / WP:ORG. Best.4meter4 (talk) 22:10, 23 August 2026 (UTC)

An essay, and thus an unambiguous violation of WP:NOT. Wikipedia is not a platform for the publication of a personal criticism of an educational system. If the South African post-school educational system needs coverage beyond what can already be found in Education in South Africa, it should be added to that article: any such coverage must of course be encyclopaedic and not the opinionated editorialising presented here - nothing in the essay appears worthy of a merge. I simply don't think there is enough WP:SIGCOV for this person to pass the WP:GNG. Wikipedia editors should be held to the same bar as everyone else for notability. Lack of significant in-depth coverage from reliable, secondary sources. The high likelihood the article has been AI-generated is just another nail in the coffin. - Delete I searched (and rewrote the article, checking many of the cited refs), and although I found additional news coverage of his election to the WMF Board, I didn't find any additional coverage before that, and the majority of the earlier coverage is really about the effort to expand Wikipedia coverage and editing in Africa and specifically Wikimedia South Africa's efforts along those lines. He receives credit for spearheading and articulating those efforts as chapter head, but prior to his taking the Board seat, the coverage about him individually is overwhelmingly WMF. So his one point of notability in independent reliable sources is his election to the board as its first African member, and I agree that that's insufficient. Yngvadottir (talk) 23:48, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
- Delete. He is possible notable for one event, but that would be WP:SINGLEEVENT. Khalitate (talk) 05:35, 24 August 2026 (UTC)

Appears non-notable for BLP. I did a brief search but could find no significant sources outside of the poetry library. Do not believe notability threshold met for academic/author. Coldupnorth (talk) 08:52, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

- Comment: yet to make a decision here, but the subject's works have been subject to at least ten reviews, which would meet one criterion for WP:NAUTHOR. Leaning towards a !vote pro-keep. Ighs (talk) 14:44, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
- Keep. His collection Claiming Kindred was reviewed in the Guardian, Warwick Review and Acumen. His Purgatorio translation was reviewed in Prospect, The Financial Times the Los Angeles Review of Books, Plough, Australian Book Review, the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, London Magazine, the New Yorker, and the New York Review of Books. His Paradiso was reviewed in The Scotsman. His book Psychoanalysis and Ethics: The Necessity of Perspective was reviewed in Psychoanalytic Psychology and the British Journal of Psychotherapy. His collection The Arrow Maker was reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement. His Collected Poems was short listed for the Saltire/Scotsman Scottish Book of the Year and reviewed in Scottish Affairs and the Times Literary Supplement. His early work is discussed in Roderick Watson's article "Scottish Poetry: The Scene and the Sixties". Jahaza (talk) 16:08, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
- Keep, per above. Ighs (talk) 17:12, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
Comment: On one hand, one citation is not enough for a BLP. On the other hand, additional sources are available. Ping me when you add more to the article. Bearian (talk) 21:04, 16 August 2026 (UTC)
