Protecting templates

Thanks for reverting this . Since you seem to know a lot more about this than I do, I've got a few questions:

1. Does this mean I never have to add protection templates on template pages with the Documentation template?
2. Do all templates have the Documentation template?
3. Thought it's possible to untick the box, this is done by default with Twinkle. Should we request that Twinkle be modified to not add protection templates in the template namespace? Or maybe only when the Documentation template is found on the page?

@Toadspike: (1) yes, and the same applies if the template has {{Collapsible option}} but not {{Documentation}} (there may be others that also automatically add a prot icon, but I'm not aware of them); (2) no, see e.g. Template:Paris Metro Line 17 navbox; (3) I would say so, but it should be only when neither the Documentation template nor the Collapsible option template are found on the page. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 13:21, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

I tried doing it in my sandbox, but every edit breaks the template so I gave up.

It's as good a place as any (I take it that {{Infobox electronic component}}, as used at 555 timer IC and Operational amplifier, is unsuitable). You could also try dropping notes at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Electronics and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Technology directing people to your request. Since the issue is common to bands in general, there are two ways to address it. The first is to address it at the band level, which may mean a discussion followed by an RFC for each band. The second would be an MOS page specifying the preferred style of timeline, which might require an RFC to select the preferred style overall. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:58, 18 May 2026 (UTC)

You didn't need to remove the table, the main thing is that the initial statement - defined as everything from the {{rfc}} tag (exclusive) to the next valid timestamp (inclusive) - cannot contain tables or complex formatting. A flabbergasting discovery In March, it was announced that episodes 1 ("The Nightmare Begins") and 3 ("Devil's Planet") of The Daleks' Master Plan were found by the charity Film is Fabulous! in a private collection among some films. The collector gave them permission to have them and sadly passed away not long after. Upon learning of the discovery through Toby Hadoke, actor Peter Purves, who starred in the episodes alongside William Hartnell and Adrienne Hill, said "My flabber has never been so gasted". The episodes were shown at a BFI screening (with Purves in attendance) in April and are now available on BBC iPlayer in the UK and the official Doctor Who Classic YouTube channel in the US. This means that episodes 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 of The Daleks' Master Plan are now available. It has been hinted that more could be found in the near future as 95 episodes remain missing. Intelligence Bulletin from the Subwave Network The 1996 American-produced Doctor Who television film was remastered in 4K using the original film reels for a Blu-ray release this May. The restored version includes both the UK and U.S. broadcast versions and new special features. Big Finish Productions recently extended their contract with the BBC to continue licensing the Doctor Who franchise intellectual property for audio stories through 2035. The first new production to be confirmed following this announcement, is a fifteen-part box set featuring David Tennant set to begin releasing bimonthly next year. In February, the First Doctor serial The Rescue was published on vinyl record as a special release for Record Store Day in the United Kingdom. Circuit Breaker, a new multi-platform story starring Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor was announced by BBC Studios to launch this June. Spanning audio, books, comics, games, magazine, internet, and Blu-ray releases, tells a singular interconnected story about UNIT's Black Archive across several mediums. Seventeen years after its last release, Character Options is releasing a new five-part set of Doctor Who figures beginning in July. In the United States, AMC+ has secured rights to be the exclusive streaming video on demand host of all 2005–2022 Doctor Who episodes. This era of Who has been unavailable to stream in the States since its removal from HBO Max in July 2025. Noticeably absent from press releases are mention of spin-off series Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures; while these shows have historically been packaged with this era of Who in streaming deals on HBO Max, before that on Amazon Prime Video, as well as Netflix and Hulu in the ancient days, there is no confirmation if these will be included. Elsewhere in America, Classic Who has it's own streaming home on BritBox (yes, BritBox still exists on this side of the pond), while the 60th anniversary specials and Gatwa's era remain on Disney+ for the foreseeable future. Disney has also yet to release The War Between the Land and the Sea, a five-part miniseries previously marketed by the company as releasing outside of the UK and Ireland in "early 2026". There is also no news on where, if anywhere, future episodes of Who will air or stream in the United States (or elsewhere worldwide, for that matter); however, AMC Global Media (the owner of AMC+) owns BBC America, which it regularly licenses BBC content for and was the linear broadcaster of Who from 2009–2022, and a non-controlling ownership stake in BritBox. AMC+ was also previously the next-day streamer of Who episodes during the Jodie Whittaker/Chris Chibnall-era as a transitional period between their broadcast on BBC America and release on HBO Max. Given this, and the global reach of AMC+, it's a feasible home for future new episodes and even the rumored potential of a co-production deal to fill the funding deficit left by Disney. Succession The oldest-living person associated with the Whoniverse since Arnold Yarrow's death in December 2024, Laurie Webb, sadly passed away on 29 March aged 101 years, 327 days. He remains the fifth longest-lived person associated with the Whoniverse and the tenth to become a centenarian. RFC on Ayyubid Dynasty

Please take a quick look at the RFC on the Ayyubid dynasty. I had been developing a draft RFC during DRN, and was in the process of launching it, and discovered that another editor had copied my draft RFC, and inserted some of their own language, but had apparently forgotten to include the {{RFC}} tag, so it wasn't a live RFC. I think that I handled that by collapsing their attempt at an RFC, which wasn't really an RFC because it wasn't tagged and so wasn't in the list, and then inserting my real RFC. Template process question

Hi there! We've crossed paths a few times over the years, and I was wondering if you could lend your experience on an issue that keeps resurfacing. First, no rush at all if you're busy. This can wait.

It boils down to this comment, although you may need to scroll up for some context. I realize you helped build RFCNOT from this discussion. Just had me wondering if perhaps more clarification is actually needed somewhere to explain to editors how they should go about demoting a template they feel should be substituted instead of transcluded. Maybe there are situations where they don't want to actually delete the template, so it may not be immediately obvious that TfD is the right venue when discussion on the template talk page stalls.

Should something be added to WP:SUBST and subsequently, WP:TFD? Or is there existing guidance somewhere I'm missing? --GoneIn60 (talk) 18:56, 24 May 2026 (UTC)

Hello @Redrose64, I wanted to kindly request your help regarding the sigmabot having updated to the wrong counter (10) which happened because by mistake, I modified the counter value from 1 to 10. I have undone the change since but now I have to link archive 10 to my current talk page to show the archive as it doesn't appear on the talk page banner as archive no. 2. Felixstowe Branch Line

Hi Redrose - I see you reverted some changes I made to current preserved locations of industrial shunters. I appreciate they were not referenced but have found myself wondering whether that information is really required. Also when I originally wrote the Felixstowe Dock section I hoped others would fill in the missing blanks. As they have not I am tempted just to terminate the table at the DL11 and add a sentence to the effect of "After that a number of Class 08 shunters have worked in the dock area and these are exchanged from time to time for maintenance purposes". I've made a total of 18 edits to Felixstowe branch line:

• The first nine were on 15 May 2013 which concerned reference formatting (composite diff)
• Two edits on 4 January 2015 to (a) remove editorialising and (b) remove an undesirable comma
• One edit on 20 October 2015 to fix a list format
• One edit on 28 January 2016 to fix up some refs
• One edit on 11 October 2016 to remove some info which I considered superfluous
• One edit on 8 October 2021 to correct a ref format
• One edit on 13 February 2026 which added a wikilink
• Most recently, two edits on 25 June 2026, one of which was a revert, but the second applied the fix that I suspect you were attempting (composite diff)

Reverting Paisley Gilmour Street category

Sorry, but aren't you splitting hairs here? "Paisley Gilmour Street rail accident" redirects to "Paisley Gilmour Street railway station" so the effect is the same, as there is no separate page for the accident. There are numerous other cases in this category where it refers to a location/station rather than an accident, for the same reason. Hyperman 42 (talk) 10:07, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

I will however correct the categories as suggested, as I was unaware that the separate titles existed - they did not come up on a Wikipedia search - but it would have been quicker and easier if you had corrected them yourself rather than reverting them. In fact when I went to the two "accident" pages, it simply brought back the "station" pages and there was no way to put the "accident" links into the category. So I have reverted your undos. @Hyperman 42: First, I did put the cat onto the accident page, see my contribs from that timeframe. Second, it's easy to get back to the redirect in order to edit that - just below the "From Wikipedia, the free ..." notice there will be a link back to the redirect. You can use the "what links here" feature. At Paisley Gilmour Street railway station, locate What links here. In most skins, it's in the left sidebar; in Vector 2022 it may be in either sidebar or in a dropdown menu, depending on your settings. Click that link, then select both "Hide transclusions" and "Hide links", then click Go. This yields this list which has 13 entries as I type this. Five of these include the words "accident" or "crash". You can use the page name link to get to the redirect, which will show its categories (if any) in the usual box at the bottom; there's also an "edit" link by means of which you can see the category markup, and amend if necessary. Only one of the five redirects needs categories; in this case Paisley Gilmour Street rail accidentPaisley Gilmour Street rail accident is the one.
