Happy Easter! - Bach's oratorio for TFA, and the cantata FAC on a good course already. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Aza returning apparently in about a week or so for main Bach biography page. ErnestKrause (talk) 16:44, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you today for your contributions to Bridge, - a broad topic, in team work! My father loved bridges, and I wrote a few articles with that in mind (Empress Elisabeth Bridge, adding to Chain bridge and Müngsten Bridge, the latter for childhood memory), and also thinking of bridges between people. - I brought two bios to the same page, Christian Schwarz-Schilling and Bill Ramsey whose regular Swingtime I used to hear in the car driving to choir rehearsals. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:13, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm recalling the effort on the Bridge article which had a good FAC promotion. By the end of this month Aza is planning to return to the Bach article to get it to nomination; will you have time to be joining in? ErnestKrause (talk) 14:09, 18 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am driven by those who recently died (nothing heavy right now, so can't promise. How about another peer review after Aza24 worked on it? I'll be rather occupied RL when April turns into May, and concerts coming up end of May. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:00, 18 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sounds interesting. Toccata and Fugue for May sounds nice for you, and for me its the cherry blossoms for one week and then they are all gone. ErnestKrause (talk) 16:28, 18 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Today's story is about one of three bios I brought to today's main page: look and listen, an extraordinary woman in many respects. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:03, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
update: Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen, BWV 43 is now a FA. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:19, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Much congratulations. Good to here from you Gerda, what's next for Bach? ErnestKrause (talk) 01:57, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

multiple temporary accounts

edit

Hello there,

You added some bits to Wikipedia:Temporary accounts § Using multiple temporary accounts.

What previous discussion were you thinking of?

What is CWW?

You added links to WP:IP hopper and WP:THEYCANTHEARYOU. On the surface of it, both lead to information pages written before the introduction of temporary accounts. Could you perhaps find more contemporary information? I find it unfortunate to link to information from the IP or anon era.

My best guess as to why you considered WP:IP hopper relevant is that unregistered users would "hop" between different TAs as soon as they switched computers (or user logins, or browsers, or browser profiles). If this is the case, we need a separate page for that. IP hopping is both not relevant to the temporary account feature, it is perhaps the one case where you would keep your temporary account! In this regard TA users and IP users are complete opposites!

If you want to caution against leaving messages at TA users' talk pages, because "Logged-out editors using the mobile web interface may not receive notifications when another user leaves them a user talk page message." we definitely need to wrap this presentation in a contemporary presentation. I do not think it will do to link to such an outdated and technical page.

Regards, CapnZapp (talk) 16:55, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi CapnZapp; If you look more closely at the WP:IP hopper article, then there is at the top an indication that the material applies to Temp account hoppers as well. I can copy-paste it here if you need to see it here. I also contacted sysops about why the IP hopper page was not completely updated into a separate page for the Temp account hopper, and apparently no-one has had the time for it. Possible you have some interest to take it up for Wikipedia.
There are some similarities and some dissimilarities between IP and Temp accounts which can be clarified. Temp accounts are limited to 90 days, which was not the case for IP accounts, which could have been perpetual. Apparently, the 90-day limit on Temp accounts is to allow new users to decide if they want to open a regular account on Wikipedia, and 90 days provides sufficient time for deciding. By the way, you can look up WP:CWW on this link, since I adapted the material added from the IP hopper page.
There is also some other useful info at WP:TAIV which might be of interest to you. This has implications for SPI and CheckUser in case Temp accounts are misused, for example in WP:LOUTSOCK/WP:PROJSOCK. Let me know what you think. ErnestKrause (talk) 17:15, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay so now I understand that by "by CWW" you merely signal your intention to give credit where it is due. I still don't know which "previous discussion" you are referring to that - presumably - discuss Using multiple temporary accounts and how it lacks certain information. I am asking this because before I wade in I would like to know more about the motivations behind your additions, in particular whether the concerns are technical or directed to the casual user.
Which brings me to my concern. For technical users an article like IP hopper is fine of course, but for the casual users WP:TEMP is directed to (this page is linked as the first port of call to "what even is a temporary account?" not only is obsolete (or semi-obsolete) information directly unhelpful, the technical level is far higher than ideal. I basically wonder how much of your additions would be more appropriate at the technical subpage linked at Wikipedia:Temporary accounts § Technical details. (I currently I am not saying any or all of it is, because I don't know the back story)
Probably everything you're referring to in your last paragraph though (WP:TAIV, SPI, CheckUser, WP:LOUTSOCK, WP:PROJSOCK) is though. CapnZapp (talk) 16:20, 25 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Its easy to see the back-story just by linking to the sysops page where I've tried to contact User:Daniel Case about this since he appears to be one of the Wikipedia experts about the IP hopper page and its updates to new pages. He's often busy though you could try to contact him for his viewpoint if he has time. If you are planning to upgrade the TOC for the current Temp account page, then it would be nice to see your thoughts. I think that covering the basics such as why Temp account are only for 90-days, and the basics of what proper/improper conduct on Temp account should be, would make a good starting place. Let me know about your thoughts for an enhanced TOC for that page. ErnestKrause (talk) 18:32, 25 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I do agree we need to update those pages (and, to some extent, WP:/64) since while the introduction of temporary accounts does not completely invalidate the issues discussed, it would require we amend (or at least reword) them.
Temp accounts help us track someone using a mobile or portable device to appear (at least on the IP basis) to be different users in a way we couldn't before. But someone can also use multiple temp accounts on the same IP or its /64 or /32 (possibly, I think, if it's a cluster somewhere like a school, library, or hotel business center) where Deep Freeze or something like it wipes any trace of the temp account clean with any reboot. So while they're helpful, they're not perfect. Daniel Case (talk) 18:43, 25 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
To be clear, here I am only concerned with the fact Ernest linked to technical and/or possibly out of date information from a highly newb-focused help page; possibly the most newb-focused help page of all. I am wondering if there are any obstacles to not linking to such advanced topics from this page. Alternatives could include paraphrasing any pertinent non-technical information really needed or moving the links to the technical subpage. CapnZapp (talk) 14:06, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
User: Daniel Case; It seems like your account would be the most qualified of the three of us for you to try to start to udpate this page(s). I'll try help out with proof-reading and the rest if you think its useful; I've already stated above that the article outght to include a little about the history of why Temp account have taken over for IP accounts, and also something about the proper/improper use of Temp accounts on Wikipedia today. Let me know if I could assist you on this. ErnestKrause (talk) 19:32, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I took the liberty of moving the technical links to the /Technical subpage. I wish you luck updating these resources. Regards CapnZapp (talk) 19:37, 27 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

talk page archive

edit

Hello ErnestKrause!

Your talk page (this page) has well over a hundred sections by now, making it kind of a long scroll past the table of contents.

Have you considered starting an talk page archive?

Btw, this is not a template. It is not a warning. You were hit with zero policy links and no newb advice. You're not forced to do anything. Just a friendly reminder your talk page is getting longish. Have a nice day! CapnZapp (talk) 11:52, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

If you know how to set it up then its ok with me if you would like to add the archive; it wasn't meant to be longish. ErnestKrause (talk) 12:10, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
First off, we would all get very long talk pages as time passes and we contribute more, so no worries!
If you're asking me to set up automatic archiving for you, please restate your wish before I edit another user's talk page.
If you're asking how to set up automatic archiving yourself (which I guess is the preferred option), it can be varying degrees of easy. The easiest way is real easy - add the {{subst:Setup auto archiving}} template to the very top of your talk page (this page) by typing {{subst:Setup auto archiving}} (including the curly brackets) above all the sections (including the first one, "A belated welcome!") and posting that edit. That's all - then you just wait. About one day later you should find that the bot has found and processed your talk page. At that point feel free to ask me or at the Teahouse if you have any questions.
There is comprehensive documentation over at User:Lowercase sigmabot III/Archive HowTo. That page also contains instructions on how to set up the bot config yourself. There is more to say, but I'll stop here. Good luck! CapnZapp (talk) 23:00, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
