JumpStart 1st Grade

  • ... that JumpStart 1st Grade won "Best Home Learning Program for Children" at the 1996 CODiE Awards?
5x expanded by Guyinblack25 (talk). Number of QPQs required: 0. Nominator has fewer than 5 past nominations.

Guyinblack25 talk 14:44, 14 July 2026 (UTC).

  • The article received a 5x expansion within seven days of the nomination, and is properly sourced and free from close paraphrasing. No QPQ required for the nominator for having less than five nominations. None of the hooks as currently written seem to be intriguing or interesting to a broad audience: ALT1 and ALT2 seem like givens in that an educational game would consult educators. ALT0 doesn't seem all that interesting either if the reader isn't familiar with the CODiE Awards. Do you have any other possible hook suggestions or angles? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 13:44, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. Regarding your points:
Let me know what you think. (Guyinblack25 talk 14:37, 17 July 2026 (UTC))
The issue here is more the angle itself, not the wording. Winning an award isn't necessarily intriguing by itself unless the award is well-known, prestigious, or the award was won under intriguing circumstances. ALT3 isn't that intriguing either: companies get acquired all the time. I may take a look at the article again soon and make some suggestions. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 23:37, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
Just a counter-point, not every game wins an industry award and not every company gets acquired. Regardless, I await your suggestions after your review. Thanks. (Guyinblack25 talk 03:12, 18 July 2026 (UTC))
Naruto asked for ideas on the Wikimedia Discord, and I came up with ALT4: "... that two critics described a video game as engaging for "even the most jaded first grader"? ALT4a: "... that two critics described an award-winning video game as engaging for "even the most jaded first grader"? ALT5: "... that critics described a video game aimed at young children as too challenging for some young children? ALT5a: "... that critics described an award-winning video game aimed at young children as too challenging for some young children? 1brianm7 (talk) 08:15, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. I think ALT5a is the best. My only thoughts are maybe add "edutainment" for better context, and I think the wikilink is a bit too long. "... that critics described an award-winning edutainment game aimed at young children as too challenging for some young children?" What do you think? (Guyinblack25 talk 15:45, 22 July 2026 (UTC))
@1brianm7 @Guyinblack25 What about ALT6 "... that the educational video game JumpStart 1st Grade focuses on eighteen areas of study?" or ALT6a "... that the educational video game JumpStart 1st Grade focuses on nearly twenty areas of study?" source: NewAccount7295 (talk) 18:42, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
I think ALT5a is the way to go, with some minor tweaks proposed above. Let's see what the others say. (Guyinblack25 talk 02:53, 24 July 2026 (UTC))
I'm in favor of ALT5a. I can approve it if others are onboard with it. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 05:30, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
I'm in favor of the edits I proposed above, but will be on board with ALT5a as 1brianm7 wrote if that's the consensus. I guess for clarity, here's my edits as ALT5b: "... that critics described an award-winning edutainment game aimed at young children as too challenging for some young children?" (Guyinblack25 talk 15:07, 25 July 2026 (UTC))
I think ALT5a and ALT5b both work well, don't have a strong preference either way. 1brianm7 (talk) 20:22, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
  • @Guyinblack25: I was going to approve ALT5a/ALT5b, but I couldn't see in the source where the hook fact is mentioned (about it being too difficult for some children). I'm also not sure if it was really multiple critics in general, or if it was just HomePC. If possible, also please mention here the relevant quotes supporting the fact. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 02:01, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
Sure. Here are the quotes from the Wikipedia article and respective sources:
  • HomePC - "the editors pointed out that younger children may need assistance on portions that are too challenging for them."
    • HomePC (1995-11-15). "JumpStart First Grade". Variety/Computers. Evansville Courier & Press. Evansville, Indiana, United States: E. W. Scripps Company. p. 23. Retrieved 2026-07-09 via Newspapers.com.
  • PC Gamer - "Aycock advised parents to assess when to introduce it to their children due to the difference in grade levels the concepts are introduced across states."
  • Macworld - "He wrote that first graders will love the program and enjoy the lessons; however, he noted that some activities may be too difficult for five and six year olds."
    • Tessler, Franklin (October 1999). Gore, Andrew (ed.). "Get Smart". Features. Macworld. United States: Mac Publishing. p. 84. ISSN 0741-8647 via Internet Archive.
  • Allgame - Not explicitly in the Wikipedia article, but this review that's cited for other parts concurred: "The lessons are real. Some are almost too challenging for first graders (such as the lunchroom activity, Serving Up Fractions)"
Let me know if you have any further questions. (Guyinblack25 talk 03:36, 4 August 2026 (UTC))
@Guyinblack25: These will need to be better integrated into the article, because right now the claim only seems to be cited to HomePC specifically, and even then, it is attributed to its editors, rather than, as you suggested, a general sentiment expressed by multiple reviewers. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 05:22, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5: There is a summary sentence in the middle of the second paragraph of the Critical response section: "Commentators attributed the need for assistance to some activities being too challenging for younger children." This is followed by the sourced sentences above from the PC Gamer and Macworld writers. Would it be helpful to start a new paragraph there? I could add something from Allgame's writer to further support it too. (Guyinblack25 talk 14:20, 7 August 2026 (UTC))
Yes, because right now the hook does not meet WP:DYKHFC. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 14:43, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
Does this edit address your concern? (Guyinblack25 talk 15:17, 7 August 2026 (UTC))
Yes it does. Approving ALT5a/ALT5b only. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:02, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
