Ruibal is an Argentine company engaged in the publishing, manufacturing and commercialization of board games, toys and family entertainment products. It was founded in Buenos Aires by brothers Luis Ruibal and Raúl Ruibal, and became widely identified with domestically produced games, including Carrera de Mente.[1][2]
History
editThe company's initial activities were linked to leatherworking and woodturning. In its early years, it manufactured leather dice cups for use with dice; it later incorporated metal roulette wheels and other gaming items, gradually shifting its production toward the toy industry.[3] This transition included traditional games such as dominoes, ludo and the Game of the Goose, which preceded some of its most widely distributed titles in the Argentine market.[3]
In 1976 the company launched Memotest, one of its most widely circulated products. Nearly a decade later, in 1985, it introduced Carrera de Mente, a quiz-based board game consisting of a board, booklets and themed cards. According to iProfesional, the game had reached 16 editions by 2023 and sold approximately 100,000 units annually.[3] El Cronista also identified Carrera de Mente among the company's best-selling board games and described the operation of Ruibal's production plant in the city of Buenos Aires.[4]
The popularity of Carrera de Mente led to the Ruibal name becoming closely associated with quiz games in Argentina. In 2010, Clarín cited company representatives while discussing the continued relevance of board games compared to other forms of entertainment, and referred to Carrera de Mente as a benchmark title in the local market.[5] The newspaper later again listed the game among classic board games that maintained a commercial presence alongside other traditional titles.[6]
Products
editRuibal's catalogue includes children's, family, quiz, card, puzzle, traditional and designer games. Among its original titles are Carrera de Mente, Don Rastrillo, Memotest, Sopa China and Conejos en el huerto.[4][7]
The company also markets or publishes local versions of licensed and traditional games, including Uno, Battleship, Pictionary, Scrabble, Rummy and Buraco, as well as various products from the Mattel line.[8][9]
Carrera de Mente has had several editions and adaptations, including family and educational versions, card formats, and thematic variants such as Carrera de Mente La Vuelta al Mundo.[10] In 2025, Clarín included a card version of the game in a selection of board games for holidays, reflecting the continued commercial presence of the franchise in formats beyond the traditional board.[11]
