Magma Math is a Swedish educational technology company that develops a mathematics learning platform for schools, covering both primary and secondary education. The app allows teachers to assign interactive math tasks and view students' work and performance in real time, supporting formative assessment and enhanced learning.[1]

The company operates in Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, and Poland. The curriculum is aligned with the respective country's program.[2]

History

Magma Math was founded in 2015 by Henrik Appert and Arvid Gilljam in Stockholm, Sweden. The founders have said they created the platform in response to declining mathematics performance in schools and the difficulty teachers faced in identifying learning gaps before exams.[3] The product first launched under the name Matteappen ("the math app" in Swedish) in Swedish primary schools.[4] After the success on the Swedish market, the company rebranded as Magma Math and launched in the United States in 2021, reporting school-district partnerships in more than 30 states.[5] It raised $5 million to expand in the US market in 2022.[5] In November 2024, it secured a $40 million Series A funding round led by Five Elms Capital, intended to support product development and expansion across the US, the UK, and Sweden.[6][7] In 2025, Five Elms Capital invested an additional $10 million to finance the company's expansion and the progress of artificial intelligence implementation.[8][9][2] Magma Math also received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2024 to improve math instruction in underserved US school districts.[10]

Product

Magma Math is a digital mathematics learning platform for K-12 classrooms. The platform provides live data on class performance, playback of a student's solution, automated assessment of student work, and generation of tasks at different difficulty levels based on different curricula. Students solve mathematical tasks on a tablet or computer, and the platform includes accessibility features such as multilingual support and text-to-speech.[1] The platform is developed for use with the Building Thinking Classrooms teaching framework developed by Dr. Peter Liljedahl and supports the Bridges in Mathematics curriculum.[11]

Magma Math has earned the ESSA Tier II evidence seal, showing a statistically significant positive impact on student achievement. A study of 1,686 students in grades 4-8 across 13 schools in an Ohio public school district was conducted for certification under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in the 2024-2025. It compared students who used Magma Math with a control group and reported that students in grades 4 and 5 who used the platform scored higher than the control group, while differences in grades 6-8 were not statistically significant.[12] Magma Math has published studies on the use of its platform in schools. A company study of Sweden's 2021/2022 year-6 national mathematics examination reported that students who used the platform had a lower fail rate than in the 2018/2019 examination.[13] Magma Math holds the ISTE Seal of Approval 2025-2027. The ISTE (The International Society for Technology in Education) seal is awarded to standout companies in the edtech field that comply with digital pedagogy, technical usability, and the ISTE Standards.[14]

Magma Math has received international recognition: awards include "Growth Company of the Year" and "Social Impact Award" at the Swedish TechArena Challenge in 2025,[15] and triple win at the BETT 2026, in categories 'Primary Digital Learning Product (Numeracy & Maths)', 'International Digital Educational Resource (non-UK)' and 'Company of the Year (<£3m)'.[16]
