Harish Chandra Dube (1940-2025) was an Indian academic, mycologist and plant pathologist. Dube served as the President of the Mycological Society of India for the Twenty-Sixth & Twenty-Seventh Volume of the Kavaka, society's open-access peer-reviewed journal. He was Professor and Head of the Department of Life Sciences at Bhavnagar University for 17 years before his retirement in 2002.
Early life
editBorn in 1940 in the village of Kapiya, located in the Itwa tehsil of then-Basti district, United Provinces of British India (now in Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh), Dube was the eldest of the three sons born into a landowning Malviya Brahmin family to Pt. Beni Madhav Dube and Smt. Dhaneshwari Devi. His father, grandfather, Pt. Jagannath Dube, great-granduncle, Pt. Dudhnath Dubey and granduncle, Pt. Ram Bihari Dubey, all found their career in law. H. C. Dube was the first to take a research career in his family of legal practitioners.
Education
editDube completed his early schooling in Uttar Pradesh and earned his Master of Science (MSc.) in Botany from Gorakhpur University in 1963. He then moved to the University of Allahabad for doctoral studies under the supervision of mycologist Prof. K. S. Bilgrami, receiving his D.Phil in 1966.
Following his doctorate, Dube completed a post-doctoral research fellowship (1966-1971) at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany, University of Madras, under the guidance of Padmabhushan Prof. T. S. Sadasivan.
He was later awarded a Senior DAAD Fellowship to conduct advanced plant pathology research at the University of Hannover in Germany under Prof. Fritz Schönbeck
