GEOSAT is a Portuguese Earth observation company headquartered in Matosinhos, Portugal. It operates optical Earth observation satellites and provides satellite imagery and geospatial data to governmental and commercial clients.
History
editGEOSAT was founded in 2021 following the acquisition of assets from Deimos Imaging, a Spanish Earth observation company that entered insolvency proceedings that year.[1] The acquired assets included two optical Earth observation satellites, previously designated Deimos-1 and Deimos-2, which were subsequently renamed GEOSAT-1 and GEOSAT-2.[1]
The company's technical operations are based at the Parque Tecnológico de Boecillo in Valladolid, Spain, where approximately 30 specialists formerly employed by Deimos Imaging continued to operate under the new ownership.[1] The company's registered headquarters are in Matosinhos, Portugal.
In 2024, ESA and GEOSAT signed a Letter of Intent under ESA's InCubed programme to develop commercial Earth observation applications.[2] GEOSAT has been designated as a contributing mission operator under the Copernicus programme.[3]
Satellites

editGEOSAT-1, formerly Deimos 1, is a medium-resolution multispectral satellite launched on 29 July 2009. It operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit and provides imagery at 22-metre resolution with a 600-kilometre swath, used for land use mapping, agricultural monitoring, and environmental assessment.[4]
GEOSAT-2
editGEOSAT-2, formerly Deimos 2, is a sub-metre resolution optical satellite launched on 19 June 2014. It was the first fully privately operated European Earth observation satellite capable of sub-metre multispectral imagery, with a ground resolution of 75 centimetres in panchromatic mode.[4][1] The satellite operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit at approximately 620 kilometres altitude.
Operations
editGEOSAT delivers satellite imagery on demand. According to a 2022 report in El Día de Valladolid, the company was capable of delivering imagery within ten to forty minutes of tasking.[1] Its client base includes governmental bodies, private companies, research institutions, and universities, primarily in Europe.[1]
Documented operational deployments include:
- A contract with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) for maritime surveillance in the Mediterranean Sea, including monitoring of vessel activity.[1]
- Satellite imagery provided during the 2022 Sierra de la Culebra wildfire in Zamora, Spain.[1]
- A commission from the BBC to track the A-74 iceberg, which calved from the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 2021.[1]
Atlantic Constellation
editGEOSAT is a participant in the Constelación Atlántica (Atlantic Constellation) programme, a bilateral Spain–Portugal initiative to deploy sixteen Earth observation satellites — eight per country — for monitoring the Atlantic Ocean and coastal zones.[1][5] The programme received co-financing from Portuguese public authorities.[1]
