ByteSnap Design is a British embedded system and electronics design consultancy based in Longbridge, Birmingham, England. Founded in 2008, the company provides electronic hardware and software development services for industrial, transport, energy, healthcare, smart homes, and electric vehicle applications.[2] They have received two British Engineering Excellence Awards; "Consultancy of the Year" (2013)[3] and "Design Team of the Year" (2016)[4].
The company has participated in government-funded research into vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology,[5] and later established Versinetic, a division focused on electric vehicle charging.[2][6]
History
editByteSnap Design was founded in 2008 by engineers Dunstan Power and Graeme Wintle. The company designed EV charging technology for the 2012 London Olympics and have worked with the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) as well as being an integral part of the government-backed V2G VIGIL consortium.[7] In 2014, the company moved to Longbridge Technology Park due to expanding their product portfolio and reported having 14 employees.[8] The company has clients in the UK, Europe, and the United States.[citation needed]
In 2017, ByteSnap Design became the first UK-based Approved Engineering Consultant for semiconductor manufacturing and design company NXP Semiconductors.[9][10] During 2018 - 2020, the company participated in the collaborative research and development program, The VIGIL Project (vehicle-to-grid intelligent control,) focusing on V2G charging infrastructure and smart energy management, alongside Aston University, Grid Edge, and Nortech Management.[11][12][13] The project was funded by Innovate UK, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.[5][14]
In 2020, ByteSnap launched Versinetic, a spin-off dedicated to electric vehicle charging and vehicle-to-grid technologies.[7][2][15]
In 2023, the company reported record growth in hardware and software projects in the medical device industry including embedded firmware to high-performance graphical user interfaces connecting medical devices based on the Internet of things (IoT.) ByteSnap Design's hardware and software has provided services to urine analysis systems and remote monitoring using home care devices to next-generation patient monitoring equipment with high-definition LCD panels, among others. Due to expanding their services, the company reported having 43 employees.[1][16]
In 2026, ByteSnap Design released "PCB Design Requirements: Consumer vs Industrial & Aerospace Applications – Complete Guide 2026." The report examines how PCB design constraints change across consumer electronics, industrial systems, and aerospace platforms, in relation to environmental conditions, reliability targets, and lifecycle expectations.[17][18] That same year ByteSnap began offering WirelessHART support for manufacturers facing technical and regulatory challenges associated with deploying wireless devices in hazardous areas[19][20] as well as launching its Cellular Migration Fast-Track service, helping manufacturers transition connected products from legacy 2G and 3G technologies to modern standards such as LTE-M and 4G.[21]

editFrom 2018 to 2020, ByteSnap Design participated in the VIGIL project alongside Aston University, Grid Edge, and Nortech Management.[22] The project was funded by Innovate UK, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.[5] With the first installs in 2019[23], the project aimed to develop an integrated vehicle-to-grid control platform enabling bidirectional EV charging and real-time optimisation of building electrical loads.[24]
WAND Remote Data Collector
editByteSnap Design contributed to the development of the WAND Remote Data Collector, a Low Energy-enabled device designed by Inductosense for remote sensor data collection; the product later received The King's Award for Enterprise.[25][26]
Products and services
editByteSnap Design has developed software tools and services to support embedded electronics development, manufacturing tests, and component lifecycle management.
- SnapUI is a cross-platform embedded user interface toolkit originally developed for Windows CE and later for Linux. It has been used in applications including railway departure boards, medical devices, industrial equipment, gas analysers, superyacht systems, and electric vehicle chargers.[2][27]
- SnapPro IQ is an automated printed circuit board assembly test and traceability system developed for use in electronics manufacturing environments.[28]
- Obsolescence Management as a Service (OMaaS) is a subscription-based service providing component lifecycle monitoring and bill-of-materials management support for electronics manufacturers.[29]
