Atom Learning is a British educational technology company that provides online learning platforms for primary and secondary school pupils. The company was founded in 2018 and is based in London. Its products are used in the United Kingdom and in international markets.

History

Atom Learning was founded in 2018 by Alex Hatvany and Jake O'Keeffe. The company developed an online learning platform in collaboration with teachers and software developers.

One of its early products, Atom Home, is an online learning platform for Key Stage 2 pupils, commonly used by families preparing for selective school entrance examinations. The platform initially focused on mathematics, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, with content aligned to specifications such as the Independent Schools Examinations Board pre-tests. Over time, Atom Home expanded to include broader Key Stage 2 content in mathematics and English.

The company was self-funded prior to external investment. In December 2021, Atom Learning raised $25 million in Series A funding led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2.^[1]^[2]^[3] The round was reported to be the largest Series A funding round ever secured by a UK-based edtech startup at the time.^[4]

Leadership

Alex Hatvany and Jake O'Keeffe co-founded Atom Learning in 2018 and have held leadership positions at the company since its founding.

Products and services

Atom Learning provides online educational products for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3:

Atom Home is an online learning platform used by families to support Key Stage 2 learning at home. It is commonly used for preparation for selective school entrance examinations, including the Eleven-plus.
Atom School is a platform used by schools to deliver Key Stage 2 learning content and assessments.
Atom Tuition is a platform designed for private tutors to assign work and monitor pupil progress.
Atom GCSE is an online learning platform designed to support secondary school pupils preparing for General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations.

The platforms use adaptive learning technology and include features such as mock tests, performance reporting, automated marking and homework assignment tools.

Atom Learning has received industry awards and nominations, including:

Winner of the Best AI-based Solution for Education in the AI Breakthrough Awards.^[5]
Shortlisted for The Technology Innovation Award at the British Business Excellence Awards.^[6]
Ranked second in BusinessCloud's EdTech 50 for 2023.^[7]

International activity

Atom Learning operates in the United Kingdom and in other regions, including parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the company offered free online lessons for home learning. By September 2020, Atom Learning reported partnerships with schools in multiple countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Ghana, South Korea and China.^[8]

Access initiatives

Atom Learning operates a pupil premium initiative that provides free access to the Atom Home platform for Key Stage 2 pupils eligible for pupil premium funding. Organisations including OneCornwall, The Colyton Foundation and SWIFT have worked with Atom Learning to provide access across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset.

Multiple grammar schools and education organisations have partnered with Atom Learning to provide free preparation resources to pupil premium-eligible pupils, including:

Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet, which provides eligible pupils with free access to Atom Home for Key Stage 2 and 11+ preparation.^[9]
Townley Grammar School, which celebrated its first year of partnership with the programme in 2025.^[10]
Haberdashers' Adams, which partnered with Atom Learning to provide free access to disadvantaged children.^[11]
King Edward VI Foundation (Birmingham), which announced a partnership providing access to more than 1,500 qualifying children across its grammar schools.^[12]
The Grammar Schools of Gloucestershire, including Stroud High School, which provide free entrance test preparation and KS2 resources to eligible pupils.^[13]

Technology

Atom Learning uses adaptive learning technology and artificial intelligence to adjust question difficulty based on pupil performance. The platform uses student performance data to adapt learning pathways and operates on a cloud-based technical infrastructure.
