Plot
editThis article's plot summary needs to be improved. (July 2026) |
Con City is a crime thriller that revolves around a seemingly ordinary family living in Mangalore. Saravanan runs a small mess (restaurant) with Mithra, and together they care for their young son, Jeeva, who has a physical disability. Although Saravanan and Mithra's relationship is strained and they are emotionally separated, they continue to live under the same roof for Jeeva's sake. Also living with them are Mithra's brother Jackie and the elderly Janaki, making them appear like a close-knit but struggling family.
The story takes a dramatic turn when Jeeva suddenly disappears from school. CCTV footage confirms that he has been kidnapped, throwing the family into panic. As the police investigation begins, the audience slowly realizes that this is not a random kidnapping. The abductors seem to know a great deal about the family, suggesting that someone from their past has returned.
The film then shifts into a series of flashbacks, revealing the family's biggest secret. None of them are ordinary citizens—they are all skilled con artists. Each member of the family had once been cheated or exploited by powerful people in different ways. After being pushed into desperate situations, they learned to survive by running elaborate scams. Eventually they came together and formed an unusual family built on trust, despite their criminal past.
Saravanan emerges as the mastermind behind many of their operations, while Mithra is intelligent and resourceful in executing plans. Jackie often provides comic relief but also plays an important role during the scams. Their criminal activities allowed them to build a stable life and care for Jeeva, but they also created enemies.
As they search for Jeeva, the family realizes that the kidnapping is connected to one of their earlier cons. Several people they deceived—or people linked to those scams—have motives for revenge. The family is forced to return to the world of deception they had hoped to leave behind.
The second half of the film follows Saravanan and the others as they use their con-artistry to track down the kidnappers. Instead of relying on violence, they create elaborate traps, fake identities, and misleading situations to expose the real mastermind. Multiple twists reveal that things are not as straightforward as they initially seemed, and several characters turn out to have hidden motives.
In the climax, Saravanan outsmarts the kidnappers through one final, carefully planned con. The villains are exposed, Jeeva is rescued safely, and the family's enemies are defeated. Rather than winning through physical strength, the family succeeds because of their intelligence and teamwork.

Reception
editPrashanth Vallavan of Cinema Express wrote, "Right from the beginning, we cannot help but spot several lines or scenes that feel redundant after the fact. Ironically, the film tries to have fun with itself while also trying to present itself as being more complex and intricate than it actually is" and felt it "could have been a much better film with ruthless script editing".[8] Bhuvanesh Chandar of The Hindu wrote that Con City had the "potential to become a fun entertainer about an unlikely gang of con artists, until the writing begins to teeter away from that promise.[9] Janani K of India Today wrote, "Con City sells you the idea of a clever scam but delivers the brilliance of a basic Google search".[10]
Abhinav Subramanian of The Times of India wrote, "There's nothing here you haven't seen, but the cast makes the familiar go down smooth. Con City is happy being a decent hang, and you might be too".[11] Gopi Selva of Tamil Guardian wrote, "Con City is a fun film which can be enjoyed with the family". He compared the film to Lucky Baskhar, but said it is "easily a far superior film in both its storytelling and craft".[12] Sreeju Sudhakaran of Rediff.com said the film had a "fun premise and a handful of clever scams, but its biggest con is failing to convince you it's smarter than it really is".[13] Vishal Menon of The Hollywood Reporter India wrote, "With all its pacing and detailing issues, Con City may have worked a lot better as a mini-series with enough time and importance given to the many scams that make up its runtime. But with its detour into a toll booth scam, it ends up as a comedy that takes a serious toll on one's patience.[14]
