Bellu Cemetery

Șerban Vodă Cemetery (commonly known as Bellu Cemetery) is the largest and most famous cemetery in Bucharest, Romania.

Background

At the beginning of the 19th century, the plot of land used to be a garden[1] owned by the family of Baron Barbu Bellu. The garden was a popular place for parties and the area became known as "la Bellu" (at Bellu's)[2]. A widespread myth is that Baron Bellu had donated the plot to the city council for building the cemetery, but documents show the land had been sold to the Church in 1840[3], more than a decade before landscaping work began. The cemetery has been in use since 1858.[4] The cemetery covers 28 hectares (69 acres)[5] and it is a cultural attraction in Bucharest.[6]

The cemetery is open every day from 8:30 AM to 8 PM. On public holidays, the visiting hours may differ.
