From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wī́ˀras, from Proto-Indo-European *wiHrós. Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vyras, Latvian vīrs. Other Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit वीर (vīrá), Latin vir, Old Irish fer, Old Norse verr, Ossetian ир (ir, Ossetians).
