From Proto-Polynesian *tahina (younger sibling of same sex),[1] from Proto-Central Pacific *tahina, from Proto-Oceanic *taci- (younger sibling of the same sex),[2] from Proto-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *taji, from Proto-Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *taji, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *taji, reduced from *ta-huaji, prefixed from *huaji (younger sibling).[3] Cognates include Hawaiian kaina, Tahitian teina, Tongan tehina and Samoan tei. Doublet of taina.
