Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تَكُتْ (tagut, clouds), from Proto-Berber. Cognate with Tarifit tayyut (fog, mist), Senhaja de Srair, Nefusa, and Kabyle tagut (fog), Chenoua hawt (fog) and Tamahaq tagyayt (fog).
