From Proto-Celtic *samalis (“similitude, description”), cognate with Welsh hafal (“equal”), from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-h₂el-ó- (“having the same upbringing”), a compound of Proto-Indo-European *sm̥- (“with, together”) and Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (“to grow, nourish”) which also gave rise to Latin similis (“similar”) and Ancient Greek ὁμαλός (homalós, “same, smooth”)
