mangan (plural mangan or mangans)

  1. (Japanese mahjong) A win achieving five han, or three/four han with the required number of fu; worth 12,000 points if the winning player is on the East (dealer) side or 8,000 points otherwise.
    • 2015, Ritz Kobayashi, “Hand 0: Showdown” (chapter 3), in anonymous translator, Saki, volume 1, Yen Press, →ISBN, page 75:
Even if she gets +8000 points with a mangan, she'll be at -1.

Outside tournaments the chombo penalty is a reverse mangan payment: 4,000 to East, 2,000 to other players.
    • 2016, Ch'en Huo-ch'üan, translated by Lili Selden, Special Issue on Imperial Subject Literature in Taiwan, US-Taiwan Literature Foundation, →ISBN, The Path, page 66:
In mahjong last night I had a six-han hand! I got a mangan.
    • 2023, Yuto Yotsuba, “Special Short Story "Kongming, the Pinch-Hitter"”, in Ryo Ogawa, transl., Ya Boy Kongming!, volume 10, Kodansha USA, →ISBN:
By the time they'd reached the twelfth round, Kobayashi had won the first hand by drawing his winning tile. "Tsumo! Riizumo, pinfu, dora 2—Mangan. 2000, 4000!" Incredibly, Kobayashi had won a full 8000 points on his first hand.
