igr
Tashelhit
editEtymology
editEtymology tree
Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit ايكر (iger, “field”), from Proto-Berber *e-găr (“field”). Widely considered to be borrowed from Latin ager (“field”), though inheritance from Proto-Afroasiatic cannot be ruled out. Compare Akkadian ugārum (arable land, meadow), Ugaritic 𐎜𐎂𐎗 (ủgr, “field, soil”) and Proto-Chadic *gVr- (“field, agriculture”).
