From Middle Dutch *hobben (attested only in the iterative hobbelen (“to move gently up and down, bob”)), from Old Dutch *hobbon, from Proto-West Germanic *hobbōn (“to move, stir, jump”), from or related to Proto-Germanic *huppōną (“to bob, hop”).
