From Proto-Tai *kaːŋꟲ (fishbone),[1] from Middle Chinese (MC kaengX, “fishbone”).

Cognate with Thai ก้าง (gâang), Lao ກ້າງ (kāng), Tai Nüa ᥐᥣᥒᥲ (kàang), Northern Thai ᨠ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨦ, Shan ၵၢင်ႈ (kāang), Tày cảng.
