editEtymology
editFrom Proto-West Germanic *alljan, from Proto-Germanic *aljaną (“zeal, strength”). As an element in proper nouns only in Upper High German from the 8th C.. The regular onomastic base from this root is Proto-West Germanic *alljā (Old High German ella), Proto-Germanic *aljǭ (“perseverance, passion, rival, lover”) (ōn-stem), and the Upper German compound form ellan- may simply be the oblique case, and not directly from *alljan.
