From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-; cognates include (mom), dayik (mother), dayên (wetnurse, milk-mother), dotin (to milk), Central Kurdish ده‌ڵ (dell, bitch), Zazaki dele (bitch), Gurani دەڵە (dełe, bitch) and ئەدا (eḏa, mother), Persian دایه, Ancient Greek θῆλυς (thêlus) and θηλή (thēlḗ).
