From Proto-Celtic *bristi- (haste), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰris-tis.

Cognate with Irish bras (swift) and Latin festīnus (swift).[1] Note also Proto-Germanic *brēþaz (rushed), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrē- (seethe, toss about, cook).
