Likely a compound of *Aro (a personal name) +‎ hēm (home). *Aro ultimately stems from Proto-Germanic *arô (eagle), with the combining stem *arnu-, explaining the use of -n- (rather than -o-). The toponym has, however, also been connected to *arn (“water”) and a substrate word *aran (“dale, valley”).
