Reconstruction notes
editMatasović alternatively reconstructs the term as an ablauting root noun so as to explain the discrpenancy in vocalism between the Latin term and the rest of the IE cognates. According to this theory, the full-grade would have been generalized in Latin, whereas the zero-grade would have been generalized in the other languages.[1]
