Ultimately from Old Norse Kaðrina (“female given name”), a later form of Katrina (“female given name”), from Ancient Greek Αἰκατερίνη (Aikaterínē, “female given name”). The original meaning is uncertain, although the name was associated early with καθαρός (katharós, “pure, chaste”).[1]
Compare Danish Karine, Swedish Karine and French Karine (“female given name”).
