Attested as French Bouali [1820], Greek Μπούχαλη (Boúchali) [1875]. Perhaps akin to Bulgarian бу́хал (búhal, eagle owl). Was proposed for renaming in 1938 as Buell, perhaps by influence of buall (buffalo).
