Etymology

edit

Unknown. Possibly from yadi (to take, Ra dialect), referring to a chief taking a woman as wife, though this is speculative. The form originated on the eastern coast of Viti Levu.

Noun

edit

Adi

  1. (honorific) a chiefly title for females, used alone as form of address or before the chief's name
    Coordinate term: Ratu
    Adi LitianaLady Litiana Maopa
    Vinaka, Adi.Thank you, Lady.
Di LalaLady Lala (informal for Adi Lalabalavu)
  2. a female given name

Usage notes

edit
  • Originally limited to the eastern coast of Viti Levu, this form of address has become commonly adopted by chiefly women throughout Fiji.
  • The informal abbreviation Di (as in Di Lala for Adi Lalabalavu) is not considered disrespectful, similar to English Ma'am (for Madam).
  • In Lau and parts of Verata, the form Yadi is used instead, following the Lauan sound change of epenthetic y- before initial a-.
