All Hail Chaos, Sarah Rees Brennan, 2026 novel, middle of a trilogy that started with Long Live Evil. Brennan has a lot of pieces moving on the chessboard but she keeps all the plates spinning, to mix a metaphor; she's funny and interesting and good at making me care about her characters. If you liked the first one you've presumably been eagerly awaiting this one and if you didn't like the first one are you even still reading this paragraph. (But she's doing some really interesting stuff about Story and about The Remix in particular, like, the elements and moments that become core to a story and how they can get shuffled or slanted but are still what makes that story that story. Like the book is also full of memes and jokes and cross-examination of romantasy but I think we're building up to some really interesting stuff in the last book about how much a story can change and still be itself, which is something I find very interesting as a person who thinks a lot about fannish retelling and reinterpretation.)

Two things stand between Kim Wooram and victory: rival contestants and institutional misogyny so entrenched women aren't allowed to compete at all. For the first, Wooram has exemplary skills. For the second, a cunning plan.

Workshopping. Benjamin Rosenbaum made overnight oats — I added the first wild strawberries from my garden. Not as pretty as the grocery store strawberries, but tasty!

When I asked for workshop volunteers to do a load of dishes, Benjamin Rosenbaum and Zen Dochterman decided they would ‘fight the patriarchy.’ Emily, Sam, and I looked on with approval. There’s something so pleasing about watching men wash dishes. Emily Ruby brought amazingly delicious rhubarb bars, and we had some of the passionfruit bars […]

Got my AWP proposal in with fifteen whole minutes to spare, cooked lime-masala mushrooms and cabbage varai for the last day of our workshop tomorrow (thanks to Benjamin and Kev for chopping and dishwashing), and blocked someone wildly irritating, protecting my peace. A good hour’s work, and a satisfying end to a long day. The […]

SF peeps going to AWP in Chicago next year — I had tech difficulties logging into the system, so they’ve kindly given me a tiny extension to get my proposal in. I have a few people already, but if you’re interested in being on a panel talking about how futurist SF utilizes cognitive estrangement as […]

One last pic from What’s Blooming on Harrison — we had a wine & cheese from 5-7 to close out the event, which was fun! It’s nice when people wander in to shop and are surprised by free wine and cheese. Wine donated by Lissa Dysart, the Tomato Lady, who was selling seedlings at our […]

Today! What’s Blooming on Harrison — a fabulous art festival, our biggest of the year. There’ll be artist booths for several blocks from 11-7, a kids’ carnival, and from 11-9, food and drink vendors and live music. Some fun specials for today: — we’re sharing space with the Tomato Lady, so if you haven’t got […]

Feeling a little overwhelmed. Last week, I was finally feeling whelmed for the first time in a while, with my grades in and the semester over. But we’re heading into a busy period. Last year, Benjamin Rosenbaum and I scheduled the next SLF week-long writing workshop for May 29 – June 3, figuring it’d be […]

Ship's gunner Ejoq Dosantos waives prudence for one quick off-ship errand that proves neither quick, nor easy, and quite possibly not survivable.
