It’s wild how pan bundles can get away with calling something a “5-piece set” when two of the “pieces” are lids. Motherfucker that’s a three piece set. Stop lying.

I have been “you can tell this website is aging”-ed on this post soooooo many times. So many. And like it’s fair I get it does sound that way, but I have thought this since I was 17. This is not a new gripe it’s just that I happen to be slowly replacing my cookware that I got when I was 17 now.

(The real indication of me aging here is that I’m buying stainless steel and enameled cast iron from an actual cookware company instead of nonstick aluminum from bed bath and beyond.)

'5 piece lunchbox set' is one of the pieces a thermos lid? does a lidless thermos serve a purpose in a lunchbox setting? then the thermos and lid are ONE PIECE. go to hell.

let this be the year that you stop using your school (or employer) email address for your AO3 account

  • when you leave school or leave a job, you lose that email address. This means not only that you’ll lose any emails you have saved on that address but that you might lose your ability to access AO3. When you try to reset your password or recover your account, messages are sent to the email address on file.
  • your school or employer might block emails based on words contained in those emails. that means you might miss subscription notifications, comment notifications, or emails from the Policy & Abuse team trying to contact you. These messages won’t go to spam. They’ll just be outright blocked. You will never see them.
  • your school/work systems administrator has the ability to access and read your emails (not that they necessarily would, but they have that power)
  • if you’re still in high school, it’s possible that the school’s Acceptable Use Policy (similar to a Terms of Service) would allow your parents or legal guardian to access your emails, upon request
  • school and work email addresses often use some form of your real, legal name which you may or may not want connected to your fannish identity.

As you can see, creating a free email account with a different provider is probably a good idea for a lot of reasons unrelated to AO3, too. It might seem annoying, but it’s worth it.

If you need instructions for how to change your account’s email address, here you go!

#bonus reason: to not jumpscare your exchange mods when we have to email full.legalname@largecompany.com to see if you’re cool with fisting

there’s this like… bizarrely ominous awareness campaign going on in nz relating to people getting hit by trains. you could just go “Look both ways and listen to the alarms” or whatever but they’re like:

image

i saw one on the actual train that was like A TRAIN CAN APPEAR ANY TIME. watch the fuck out everybody. you’re taking that shower and you think you’re fine? oh fuck no, EXPECT TRAINS

one of my kid's first bad dreams that he could like explain what he was upset about was about 'a bursting train' which is a train that can burst through the grass and GET you and let me tell you it has been almost two years and we are STILL hearing about the bursting train sometimes A TRAIN CAN APPEAR AT ANY TIME

AO3 should have an Annotation Mode where you can click to view all of the author's commentary and thoughts about certain parts of the work. A little comment that says "I spent five hours researching vintage radio mechanics for this and didn't even end up using it" or "this is an ancient Hebrew literary technique!" would make my day

i was reading some of my own old fics recently and discovered i had saved one in DVD Commentary Mode with margin comments pointing out my favorite jokes and talking through some of the decisions i made writing it and so on i don't remember why i did this (other than i guess that i was really pleased with some of my own jokes?) but it was fun to discover
