When the President Declared Martial Law in South Korea!

In this video, Hana from Korea shares a "Survival Manual" from South Korea to the U.S.
From the "Silver Siege" tactics to the "Philosophy of Joy (Heung)," here is how ordinary citizens defeated the army and the elite cartel.
Don't trust the system. Don't wait for heroes.
Trust your neighbor and yourself.

Iran

elisi: (Green (Iran) by schmiss)
What I didn't have on my bingo card for 2026 was AI LEGO videos from Iran... (Probably the only use of AI slop that I would defend.) I hope they have educated many people on issues they might otherwise not know. (Yes they're propaganda, but when speaking about the rot in America they are not wrong.)

Now there are many, many videos, but this one's my favourite:

Same sun rising, but we're living in hell,
while the leaders are ringing the funeral bell.
Love for the people, but the system must cease,
from Tehran to DC, we're screaming for peace...

~

I don't feel like writing any essays on the situation, but I still vividly remember the Green Movement in 2009. (Just follow the tag to see my posts from back then.) It's where this icon is from. Remember watching the news with hope and terror, seeing the sea of people protesting and thinking that surely they would win?

And then they didn't.

I have re-uploaded a video from back then (8.81MB):

My Elementary Schoolmate.flv

My Elementary Schoolmate.mov

My Elementary Schoolmate.wmv

Content/trigger warning: The footage is exclusively from the 2009 protests. Very raw and powerful, and a lot of violence and injury.

The song is from 1979, and apparently they were singing again during the Green Revolution. (Lyrics here.)

So yeah. The Iranians know a lot about living under a repressive regime... A regime that America/the West is responsible for.

ETA: The sophistication of the LEGO videos is what gets me. America (and Israel, let's not forget) is trying to bomb a people into submission or rebellion. (Bombing a school is... not the way to achieve this.)

Whereas Iranian creators are doing something much cleverer: They are not only exposing the elites and the crimes, but highlighting all the flaws in the system, the bloodstained history of the colonisers: You are a victim too. ('We share the same pain...')

More videos, but I am putting them under the cut:

I've never been on TikTok, but now appears to be time to get off. From Tumblr:

Take a look at the latest update to Terms & Conditions...
(Also has instructions for how to delete the app while bypassing the new terms.)

Instead people are switching to something called Upscrolled:

UpScrolled, a Palestinian-Founded App, Emerges as TikTok's Rival
The app gained momentum after TikTok’s US operations were taken over last week by a consortium of US-backed investors and corporations.

Among them is Oracle founder Larry Ellison, a close ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose involvement has raised alarm among users over alleged censorship of pro-Palestinian content.

TikTok’s global operations remain under its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. However, criticism intensified after TikTok permanently banned Emmy Award-winning journalist and Al Jazeera contributor Bisan Owda from Gaza on Wednesday.

Been meaning to recommend Caolan Robertson, a young journalist who is doing an absolutely excellent job of reporting from Ukraine.

I also wanted to link to this article:

Caolan Robertson is one of the best reporters of the Ukraine war, so here is his perspective on what this means for Russia, as well as talking to a Venezuelan:

ETA: Just to bring in something a bit different and I found this interesting. Here's to hoping that things don't get worse... Or maybe it's that saying: It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

If you're overwhelmed by the news this morning, please watch this:

This one's silly, but we need a bit of silliness:

And a couple of articles that I want to be able to find again:

The Guardian: 'Of course he abused pupils’: ex-Dulwich teacher speaks out about Farage racism claims

And Cuomo was a gracious loser, congratulating Mamdani and telling people off who were booing! I had forgotten what that looked like.

And then youtube suggested this, and it's wonderful:

Also, this is fascinating:

And all told, Trump’s second term has actually led to the most sympathy for migrants on record in the 21st century, per Gallup. Fully 79% of Americans now say immigration is a “good thing,” compared with 64% last year.

In positive news, the weather is gorgeous and spring-like.
elisi: (Salt of the Earth by eyesthatslay)
When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear;
so do people’s faults when they speak.

The furnace tests the potter’s vessels;
the test of a person is in conversation.

The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had;
so speech discloses the bent of a person’s heart.

Praise no one before he speaks,
for it is then that people are tested.

Sirach 27:4-7

A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.
Luke 6: 43-45

So, I fell into the rabbit hole of Kendrick Lamar's superbowl halftime show. (Disclaimer: I have never watched the superbowl - or the halftime show - ever before, and could not have named a single Lamar song before this. My interest is cultural rather than musical.)

That said, I have watched a number of Josh Johnson sets about the Lamar and Drake feud, so I had some background knowledge. However the performance itself turned out to be this dense and complex thing, full of symbolism, and well. That's my jam. ^_^

ETA: Outside the cut. Here is Josh Johnson talking about Kendrick, where he came from and why he does what he does. As always, starts as a fun set and then... digs into stuff far deeper than you would expect:

Videos under the cut )

Now the thing is that Kendrick Lamar is obviously coming from this from within his own culture, the struggle of his own community. And I think this is why it resonates? If you speak your own truth, others will recognise it.

And I think all of it ties in with this Black History Month thread about The Black Panthers.

Snippet:

To this day, if you find a white trades person over the age of 50, and ask them what "It's not race, it's class" means, many can tell you. If you ask them "Who is Fred Hampton" many can tell you. If you ask them what a "rainbow coalition" was, many can tell you.

Why does an old, white, union steel worker in Detroit know who Fred Hampton is?

'They not like us' the whole stadium chanted with Trump right there.

If you want an anthem against the oligarchs and the 1%, there it is.
