i can’t get over how crazy much ado is sometimes. it feels like a deconstruction of shakespeare’s other comedies when you look at how quick and lovesick and beautiful hero and claudio are and how well they fit the script of just classic young lovers, things like how hero is one of the only characters to speak in verse, the way claudio praises her to all his friends etc. and then how in the middle of the play the script is completely flipped. now hero is in danger because of what claudio believes and no one can help her. and suddenly the love story shatters because the same willingness claudio has to fall in love with her at first sight is the same willingness he has to believe a baseless accusation and the love story starts to descend into horror because there’s no legal course of action hero can appeal to her and her own father insults and disowns her at her wedding and she’s quite literally left for dead fainting on the ground with her father saying let her die, what is it to me? it’s insane because like 30 minutes before it’s just a happy comedy love story but shakespeare shows a real darkness to the genre because claudio may think he loves her but when it comes down to it he will never trust her. her word isn’t good enough. no one is going to listen to the woman

much ado about nothing shakespeare this is why beatrice and benedick as characters actually go so crazy character archetype wise there's literally no reason for benedick to side with beatrice and hero but he does he does

This is Kirk's shirt from Star Trek's III and IV. You have never, ever seen it like this before.

I'm not even sure it is a shirt. Why did they do this. Why did they decide to add what they added. Star Trek III and IV are never going to be the same because I am going to be aware that William Shatner's James T. Kirk is wearing this shirt.

(also it is up for auction. Link here)

justgarb

I'm crying right now. I thought this was a fever dream when my dash refreshed.

WHY

i mean obviously because it was riding up in a way that made it sit weirdly or inconsistently???? the same reason you make any shirt into a bodysuit??? and it's kirk so like OBVIOUSLY they did it up cunty you have to kirk jim kirk star trek st

The thing about professional wrestling that I find really and truly fascinating is that it takes place in a setting where

  1. Magic is unambiguously real
  2. That fact is completely irrelevant 98% of the time and has little bearing on anything

Most settings where magic is real are about magic. The wizards are the main characters or the antagonists. The presence of ghosts or mutants comes up within the first three sentences of any reasonable summary, or is a major plot twist that changes the entire story.

Meanwhile pro wrestling is a combat sport with scripted outcomes and surrounding storylines. "And also sometimes they do necromancy" is such an extraneous detail not worth mentioning. But also I cannot stress enough that sometimes they do necromancy.

You can go an entire show with zero wizard nonsense, but at any given point on any show in any promotion it wouldn't be shocking for a wizard (or demon or alien or vampire etc) to appear.

The wizards don't even win particularly often. Having actual magic powers that you use to cheat is actually somewhat less effective than "hitting someone with a blunt object while the referee is distracted" or "being large".

Funniest possible approach to magic.

there are three notable magical wrestlers to have gotten wins via magic:

  1. The Undertaker. he's a zombie cowboy undertaker biker wizard. he has lightning powers, can turn people evil, and can teleport
  2. Bray Wyatt and The Fiend. Bray Wyatt stole The Undertaker's lightning powers and had the power to summon insects and bugs, but otherwise didn't win very often. however, when he was possessed by The Fiend, he went on to be unbeaten for ages
  3. Finn Balor and The Demon. The Demon is a guy that possesses Finn Balor. most of the time, when The Demon is wrestling, he's impossible to beat

so the way to be successful as a magical wrestler is to make friends with some kind of demon or devil and let them possess you, or to get really into Limp Bizkit

One of my favorite parts of Hadestown is the way Hermes slips so seamlessly between participant and narrator. The fact that he knows from the beginning how the story is going to go, but still plays his part, surrounded by people who don’t know they’re characters in a tragedy. And he plays his part well. Every night, he tells Orpheus, “You want to talk to her? Go on," and every night, he asks, “Just how far would you go for her?” Every night, Orpheus asks him, “ It’s not a trick?” and he tells him, “No, it’s a test.” And every night, when the cycle starts again, when his voice is so broken with grief that he can barely get the words out to tell the audience - the audience that he and no one else has known was there the whole time - “Don’t ask why, brother, don’t ask how he could have come so close. The song was written long ago, and that is how it goes,” when Eurydice appears - fresh-faced and alive, with no memory of what has just happened - to ask, “anybody got a match?” he wordlessly extends his matchbook to her, and lets the story start anew. Someone’s got to tell the tale, whether or not it turns out well.

And still - AND STILL - every night, at the very beginning, he says, “Maybe it will turn out this time, on the road to hell, on the railroad line.”

there is a very specific type of political enlightenment when you allow yourself to acknowledge bad people can be attractive and funny and intelligent and still be bad people because those things don’t quantify morality

joeyclaire

“i’ve never met a pretty racist” “republican makeup” etc etc is all just enforcing the idea that being conventionally unattractive is a moral failing. stop doing that. it’s an actively dangerous idea to spread

pacific rim fucks severely for a lot of reasons but my favorite is that it opens with "the lizard aliens are unionizing so we built robots running on the power of love to fight them you got all that right" and before you have time to really process that concept bam gunshot body on the floor and the movie goes "now consider the vast power of grief in this setup" it never really stops considering

catgirlbignaturals

It also has a scene where the robot uses a boat as a baseball bat. That also fucks tremendously.

a man who has never denied himself anything meets a man who denies himself everything and the hedonist tries to lure the self-abnegator into succumbing to the pleasures of the flesh and succeeds but their rendezvous makes accidentally clear that true pleasure is derived from the perilous destructive nature of intimate connection and eventually true actual love and so we come to conclude that in fact the hedonist is the one who has never allowed himself anything true while the self-abnegator has never strayed from the path of his want and then they put them on ice skates and gave them sticks

Do the AI people know that the rest of us who never got on the bandwagon are still doing everything the same way we always have

teaboot

The AI boom has changed literally nothing about my day to day life except I now have to work harder to get access to reliable information, all the important admin work is being done wrong, and I keep getting DMs letting me know the perfectly ordinary and plausible photo I liked was actually a fake image generated by a fascist to generate views and churn out ad money for the purpose of funding their tree-powered puppy-flushing toilet
