So 2020 is over. It's been a shit year generally and won't be missed by anyone, I doubt.

cut for discussions of health and bereavement... )

In some ways going back into lockdown in England feels like it's happening all over again, but I'm definitely aware that my support networks are actually functioning remotely now with additions to the two very supportive Facebook groups I relied on earlier. We've now got a regular Vampire Dark Ages game happening almost every Sunday afternoon, I have a "long distance breakfast" twice a week with two different friends, and have a new counselling thing going on via Zoom. All in all, much better the original lockdown. The new thing is setting up Discord - GYWO has embraced Discord for 2021 and some other friends are playing AD&D on it, so we'll see how that works out.

One thing which did look up last year was the writing. It was my second year of GYWO, and I wrote almost 100k last year, so that was pretty cool. I've pledged for 150k again this year so we'll see if I can beat the 100k mark. I also need to finish off some of the UFOs (un-finished objects) both written and knitted which are hanging around still. The knitting also went very well last year, I taught myself basic Fair Isle over Christmas which was fun, so I need to complete the cardigan and three pairs of socks promised to other people so I can have a good play with it. Also so I have space to buy more Jamieson's of Shetland wool, 10 colours is obviously not enough and the balls come in little 25g size, so obviously there'll be space for more...

(I have no more space for wool or fabric. Seriously, no matter how much I keep drooling over the 225 colours of Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift I can't buy more till I make space for it.)

Title: Hydromancy
Fandom: Lewis / Rivers of London
Rating: Gen
Word count: 14197
Warnings: N/A
Characters: (primarily) Robert Lewis & James Hathaway
Author's Notes: Okay, so this is another catch up on a story I failed to link here. Case fic.

Chief Inspector Lewis has two dead bodies found in or around the river already when Detective Sergeant Hathaway is attacked and almost drowned. Lewis can’t find any connection between the two bodies and the intervention of two weird detectives from the Met is not helping Lewis' blood pressure at all. He can only hope that evidence comes up that will make sense of the situation before anyone else dies.

Hermione Granger is absolutely certain that the homeless man she keeps seeing in town is familiar. Or at least looks like someone she knows.
The Winter Soldier is doing his level best to escape Hydra, trying to work out who the hell he is and why the weird woman who drinks in the tea shop keeps buying him food.

I made it out to the shop this week and the shop had local strawberries which was nice so I bought cream as well. Generally I'm just feeling flat, struggling to get started on anything. Depression is kicking my arse. Work is (mostly) happening, in theory I'm still working full time from home. Writing is happening - I have deadlines to meet and stories to finish / edit and post. Have also been playing my mandolin and (for the first time in years) my violin, but I'm obviously limited by the fact that too much noise is antisocial. Not that that's bothering the annoying dope-smoking, 90's pop/dance-party-playing neighbours over the back. They're really beginning to irritate me. Later this afternoon I have an online CBT session which will help, and I'm making myself go to the online knitting club session at least every other week so I shall have a cup of tea, knit and chat on video-conference later. Things will get better, they just kind of suck at the moment.

The absolute hardest thing about writing Winter Soldier fic (for me at least) is that before he gets back to being more Bucky Barnes, he lacks so much personal agency that I can't help but automatically write my potential sexual partners for him as having MASSIVE worries about his ability to consent to sex. I mean, I'm writing nice people here, or at least generally nice. Mostly very clever, often sexually experienced, DEFINITELY aware of consent issues. Poor Winter Soldier, however horny you get, people still doubt you.

Title: Hygiene Protocol
Fandoms: Captain America (movies)
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 6790
Warnings: Aftermath of Violence; Dubious Consent; Fuck or Die; Physical Abuse; Medical Procedures; Specifically a heads up warning for canon-typical abuse and de-personalisation of the Winter Soldier by handlers and the Soldier himself. Also reasonably explicit/accurate description of treating broken limbs (don't worry, he's a super-soldier, he heals fast!). And sex. Of course.
Characters: Bucky Barnes/Original Female Red Cross Worker (Captain America movies)
Author's Notes: A pinch hit in the 2019 Darkest Night Gift Exchange. I've never written specifically original characters as main characters in my fanfic before, so this was a fun new one.

The Winter Soldier is injured and requires medical treatment to maintain optimal functioning.
"It fell off a twelve floor building onto concrete! That’s what’s wrong! [...] You want to explain to the boss why it ended up all bent up and fucked?” The other handler demanded.
Senior handler Sitwell’s voice cut in on the line. “Shut the fuck up!” He silenced them both. “Find someone who can do it. Someone disposable. You’ve got an hour before it starts to set in place. Get it fixed up and cleaned up.”

Title: Due Diligence
Fandoms: Moonlight(TV) / NCIS
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 21300
Warnings: Violence/combat, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
Characters: Anthony DiNozzo/Mick St. John, Josef Kostan | Josef Konstantin, Anthony DiNozzo Sr.
Author's Notes: Written in response to NimueOfTheNorth’s awesome artwork  in the Every Fandom Reverse Bang 2019. It was the crossover I didn’t realise I needed until I saw the picture! Definite proof of “Elaiel’s complete inability to wrap up a story in less than 10k words”. Takes place after the end of Moonlight series and is AU for NCIS from mid S5 Ep18 (Judgement Day pt1)

“I got a large number of people for you to look into.”
“How many?”
Josef shrugged. “At the moment? About twenty, but I can prioritise. That one’s the first.”
Mick opened the file. The front page was a basic info sheet with a head and shoulders ¾ angle portrait shot of an older man, grey-white hair brushed back off his face, california tan and broad smile. The file listed him as Anthony DiNozzo Snr, businessman and investor, laying out a series of known associates, former business partners and listing a next of kin in Anthony Dinozzo Jr, adult son.

Title: Hi Kiddo
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Gen
Warnings: Avengers: Endgame (Movie) Spoilers / Sad with a Happy Ending / Bittersweet Ending
Characters: Pepper Potts, Steve Rogers
Author's Notes: Canon Compliant, I made myself cry writing this.
Pepper opened the door and after a moment of shock, smiled at the man on the porch.

Title: Like Tears In Rain
Author: Elaiel
Rating: Teen
Warnings: non-major character death, terminal illness (canon specific)
Characters: Rodney McKay, Alternate Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Author's Notes:
“So the simple answer,” Keller told them, “is he’s not human." [...] Keller pressed her lips together for a moment. “He says he’s a “replicant”, a synthetic being made in the image of a human. He was made as a copy of their Dr McKay to work in their outer planets mining industry.”

A short, written because I liked Tarlan's sadly unclaimed SGA reverse bang art. Written hurriedly in my lunch hour and currently unbetaed as I wanted to post it ASAP.

So, [personal profile] melannen wrote a post in which she asked what people missed that's no longer around/current/popular in fandom and I replied that I missed Stargateland.

Since then I've been thinking about why I miss it so much, and I think the big thing I miss is that it gave me the external accountability that I needed to help manage my ADHD in terms of writing. ADHD means that among other things you struggle with motivation, getting started, focusing, remaining on task, and a standard tool for managing it is setting up external accountability and reminders. Stargateland did that for me and provided deadlines, commitments, motivation and a whole community of cheerleaders and support.

Since it folded, I don't write as much. I've tried bingo, but with that I'm only letting myself down, not other people so it doesn't work.

Still, there was a time for everything and with decreasing participation and the sheer amount of work a Landcomm was for the organiser(s) it was completely understandable when it closed.

I still miss it though.

So, I'm writing again. Reasonably prolifically. The prompts for the bingo, the HC bingo in particular are definitely speaking to me.

*starts writing*

Okay, this is cool, yep 500 words, I can do that, oh and that prompt will work with...yeah, okay and this one follows on nicely...

*Cues up series of 15 fics and counting in Numb3rs fandom*

*Starts writing fic 1....and writes, and writes, sets up plot, counts words....*

Damn, 1750 words. Half way through. Maybe.

*Watches plot bunny go tearing past and picks up shot gun*

Okay, everyone sing along "Kill da wabbit, kill da wabbit, kill da waaaabit!"

On the grounds of "go big or go home" I have a Trope Bingo Card and a H/C Bingo card. I couldn't decide which to do, so hell, I'm going to have a go at both. I mean, it's only five 500 word fics for a bingo right?. See my cards below!
