Infomercials starring Cathy Mitchell [UMBRELLA]

I love infomercials, so much. My personal favorite are the Magic Bullet ads that take place in some fake kitchen with the chain-smoking aunt. I stopped myself from requesting that, though, since I feel like it doesn’t lend itself well to vidding (unless you’re some infomercial superfan like I am, maybe). Cathy Mitchell, on the other hand? I honestly feel like there’s a lot to draw from here. She’s hilarious, one-of-a-kind, and she’s been the face of so many kitchen tools and cookbooks over the years.

Here’s a short one for a massive pan (Red Copper Big Time Pan):

Here’s a long one for an electric grill (Xpress Redi-Set-Go):

And here’s a playlist of a bunch of them:

The Canopener Bridge - yovo86 | @11foot8plus8 (Youtube Channel)

This YouTube channel uploads a video whenever a truck crashes into an unusually low bridge in North Carolina. It has amassed this following of bridge-enjoyers who comment that “the bridge must have gotten hungry” on every new video. The “canopener” moniker comes from how it tends to slice off just the top of box trucks that attempt to go underneath it. There’s some variety, like different types of trucks, different maneuvers, fast crashes, slow crashes…the channel has been uploading for 17 years now.

Here’s one that shows a perfect canopener maneuver.

I really can’t say any more. You just gotta watch some XD

Conclave (2024) [SAFETY]

There’s a variety of angles you could take this from. I watched Conclave in October of last year, and I felt it connected very closely with the upcoming presidential election in the US—in other words, themes of needing to choose a leader, thirst for power, needing to make a choice for the greater good rather than for personal gain, etc…but there’s also themes of death and grieving (how do we interpret what our loved ones want us to do after they are gone?) which could be interesting to explore…you could also come at it from a pure thriller angle (danger, lies, cover-ups, etc)…

I would also love a “vibes-only” vid just focusing on the outfits, backgrounds, cinematography. It’s kind of a sexy movie.

A Nice Indian Boy (2025) [SAFETY]

OK, this movie is SO GOOD! It’s a romantic comedy about Naveen, a gay (single) Indian man who struggles to fully embrace himself. He meets Jay, a white man who was raised by his adoptive Indian parents, who comparatively embraces himself, both his gayness and his connection to Indian culture. They get together pretty early in the film and we go with them through dealing with culture, family, and their own feelings. I thought it was unusually funny and very sweet. It’s a happy ending—and set your expectations for a low(er) budget.

我要和你在一起 | To Be With You (2019)

This is my number one comfort show, when nothing else will do. It’s a very melodramatic story about Lin Meiya, a perfect ingénue who returns home from studying abroad and begins a relationship with Ou Yang, a sexy but difficult young businessman (?) working at his father’s company. So it’s billed as an office romance, but it’s more just an “everything goes” type show with a new drama around every corner. It has all you could ask for in a soap opera—unknown fathers, drug deals, secret twins, trips to Thailand, kick boxing, love triangles, jealousy, plots to take down the company from the inside…

My first thought would be to make a general vid about the drama, action, and excitement of the show…I would like a Lin Meiya character vid a lot as well. The other character in the love triangle is named Li Dong…I have mixed feelings on the treatment of Li Dong but he could be a good character vid study as well. And you know what, we can throw Ou Yang into the mix there too.

OK, there’s also a villain character named Cheng Zhe who was Lin Meiya’s boyfriend when they were young, then he cruelly broke up with her in order to chase power in business (this is the spark that starts off the show, as I remember). He ends up working at the same company that Ou Yang does (of course) and dates Ou Yang’s sister…the drama!! I really like how pitiful and cruel and ineffectual he is…it might be a challenging vid, but a Cheng Zhe character vid sounds really good now that I’m thinking of it…

延禧攻略 | Story of Yanxi Palace (TV)

This show is insanely good. It’s set in the Forbidden City—our main character, Wei Yingluo, has infiltrated the palace as an embroidery maid in order to solve the mystery of her sister’s death and wreak her revenge on whoever was responsible. Wei Yingluo is something of a Sherlock-Holmes-1000-IQ-Light-Yagami mastermind who is always two steps ahead of any of her many enemies. It’s so satisfying to see her outwit foe after foe.

Besides Wei Yingluo, the show has an unusually high budget, so the costumes, hair pieces, and jewelry are all gorgeous, not to mention the sets and props. I honestly think you could watch this without understanding Chinese and enjoy it just by watching the intricate costuming. It’s a very visually rich source and would be fun to vid.

I think a Wei Yingluo character vid would be so fun, focusing on her emotional journey, or her outwitting her opponents. She has a sapphic devotion/loyalty relationship (nothing canon) with the Empress which would also make a great vid. Consort Gao, one of the major antagonists and a real drama queen, would also be great fodder for a fun vid.

Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker collaborations [UMBRELLA]

My goal here is to include everything that ZAZ have all three worked on together, which to my understanding is:

  • The Kentucky Fried Movie
  • Airplane!
  • Police Squad! (Maybe just the first episode? I think this is open to interpretation).
  • Top Secret!
  • Ruthless People
  • The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

(Of course, feel free to include anything under this umbrella that I’ve missed, and even if it doesn’t technically count since it’s been worked on by just one or two of them, that’s no problem either imo).

I haven’t actually watched all the movies/TV that this covers, but I thought the unusual visual language of these movies could make an interesting vid. Top Secret! is probably my favorite of the ones I’ve seen.
