Fresh Start challenge

With a challenge like this and my first viewing of the first episode of An Unearthly Child.... what follows is inevitable, really.

He'd tried to forget it, tried to avoid it, sidestepped and equivocated and talked his way around it... no matter now. It was here; they were discovered. The end had come.

The humans, poor fools, were lost in astonishment. He laughed, cursing the inexcusable sloth that had led to this disaster. Susan wept, the others babbled, and he laughed at the flimsiness of that fantastic mental construct, the fickle illusion of safety.

He shouldn't have allowed it. He shouldn't have pretended they were normal.

That was the thing about being on the run. The novelty was the only thing that palled.


Sticking Place


They had been right to flee. It was still hard, especially on Susan, who'd known only Gallifrey before her eccentric grandfather whisked her away.

Five months was the longest time they'd spent in one place. Schooling, museums, libraries... primitive but comfortably predictable. And now, overnight, they were fugitives again.

I won't go, she said. I'd rather leave the TARDIS and you.

Fifteen, for a Time Lord, didn't even approach the age of reason, but his heart twisted at her grief.

He couldn't let it happen. He smiled, turned to the console, and threw his magnificent ship back into the void.
