Available as a 4-door sedan or Sport hatchback (the Sport model has its own listing), the compact-sized Mazda3 has been manufactured by Mazda over four generations, the fourth-gen model debuting for the 2019 model year. Unlike some of its competition, the Mazda3 has a well-deserved reputation for engaging driving dynamics. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, with i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD) available on select trims. For 2026, the sedan is offered in four trims — GX, GS, GT and GT Turbo — with the GS available with a Luxury Package.

2026 Mazda3 Sedan Competitors

The Mazda3 sedan competes in the compact 4-door segment, its main rivals the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. Other competitors include the Nissan Sentra, Subaru Impreza, Volkswagen Jetta and Kia K4. The Mazda3 is known for its premium cabin, sportier handling and strong performance from its 2.5L engine but also offers less rear-seat space than the Civic and lower fuel economy than competitive models with hybrid powertrains.

The 2026 Mazda3 receives small packaging updates and improved standard equipment but is otherwise unchanged from 2025.

2026 Mazda3 Sedan Performance

In 2024, Mazda elevated the Mazda3’s performance by upsizing its base Skyactiv-G 4-cylinder engine to 2.5 litres from 2.0L. This upgrade resulted in a 44-hp increase to 191 hp and an impressive 186 lb-ft of torque, as well as an uptick in overall fuel efficiency. The GT Turbo model takes things to a much higher level, with the Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine pumping out a robust 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium 93 octane gas, 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular 87 octane. These engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and, depending on the trim, with either front- or all-wheel drivetrains.

As to whether the Mazda3 GT AWD Turbo is a sport sedan, Driving.ca senior contributor Brian Harper, who drove the 2024 version, said the answer “is an emphatic ‘sort of’ or ‘maybe.’ It’s not a power issue, more the lack of visceral drama. There’s no robust blat from the twin exhausts or thrilling engine note as the revs climb. Handling is good, with nicely weight steering, though switching to Sport mode doesn’t bring the firming-up factor some other cars provide .... The upshot? Drives great but it leaves you wanting more — like another Mazdaspeed edition.”

2026 Mazda3 Sedan Efficiency

NRCan rates the non-turbo-powered 2026 Mazda3 models at 8.8 L/100 km city, 6.6 L/100 km highway and 7.8 L/100 km combined, for an estimated annual fuel cost of $2,340. The turbo-powered FWD models are rated at 10.1 / 7.3 / 8.8, respectively, with an estimated annual fuel cost of $2,640. The turbo-powered AWD models are rated at 10.1 / 7.3 / 8.8, respectively, with an estimated annual fuel cost of $2,640.

2026 Mazda3 Sedan Safety

For its size, the Mazda3 sedan is one of the safer 4-doors around, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the U.S. giving the car its top 5-star rating for overall safety. In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Mazda3 its Top Safety Pick+ rating for crashworthiness.

Even the base GX trim comes with a comprehensive suite of i-Activsense safety features, including radar cruise control with stop & go, smart brake support, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, driver attention alert, high-beam control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

2026 Mazda3 Sedan Reliability

Consumer Reports is a fan of the Mazda3, recommending the car and giving the 2026 model an overall score of 77/100, just one point behind the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. Reliability is rated at better than average, as is owner satisfaction. CR lauds the Mazda3 for its “responsive and predictable acceleration,” nimble handling in the corners and a firm but steady ride. “The cabin is relatively quiet and nicely finished, but the rear seat is snug.”

The GX cabin features an 8.8-inch Mazda Connect display with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, push-button start, remote keyless entry, electronic parking brake, and black cloth heated front seats. Standard convenience features include heated exterior mirrors and automatic climate control.

The GS trim enhances both comfort and connectivity, adding a 10.25-inch full-colour centre display with touchscreen functionality when using Wireless Apple CarPlay or Wireless Android Auto, wireless phone charging (Qi), dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, rain-sensing wipers, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The available GS Luxury Package adds black leatherette seats, power glass sunroof, 10-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support and memory, and auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Going all in for the GT AWD Turbo brings with it a bunch of standard comfort and infotainment features — power sunroof, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, power driver seat with power lumbar support, navigation (on-road and off-road), Bose audio system with 12 speakers, automatic climate controls, keyless entry, radar cruise control and a head-up driving display cover off the majority. Oh, and the 360º View Monitor, helping provide additional visibility around the car when parking, not to mention front and rear parking sensors, plus a larger 10.25-inch central screen.

“It all makes for a rather pleasant environment to while away the hours driving,” notes Harper, “as long as you’re occupying the front seats. When I said ‘family-type automobile’ in the first paragraph (of the review), that should be read as suitable for families with a small kid or two, the ones who fit in rear booster seats. There’s 954 mm of front-seat headroom and 1,075 mm of legroom. Back-row seat passengers have 931 mm of headroom and 891 mm of legroom. Meaning that if you happen to be on the taller side and/or leggy (that would be me), the rear seat will prove to be uncomfortably tight, notably in the legroom department.

2026 Mazda3 Sedan Canadian Pricing 

Looking at the FWD models first, the Mazda3 Sport GX starts the ball rolling with an MSRP of $25,250, with the next-up GS at $27,850, plus another $2,200 if you add the Luxury package. The GT Sport is $34,050.

All-wheel-drive (AWD) is available in the GS Luxury Package ($32,050), GT ($36,050) and GT Turbo ($38,450) trims.
