Our world needs action, not just words. From climate change to social gaps, these challenges affect us all. At Applegreen, we recognise the role we play in building a sustainable business.
We understand that sustainability is an ongoing interrelationship with growth, operations, the customer experience and the natural environment we operate on. All are important and have a place here at Applegreen.
Drive Change is our ongoing commitment toward a better future for all. It’s simple but powerful, built on what we believe matters most: People, Planet, and Partnerships. These pillars reflect our dedication to making a real difference for everyone who’s on our journey.
We encourage our diverse workforce to be their best, while nurturing their talents and aspirations.
We strive to have a positive impact for the charity and communities we serve.
1. People
Our people are at the heart of everything we do. This pillar is centred on the social aspect of sustainability, emphasisng the well-being, rights, and development of individuals and communities within and outside the organisation.
2. Planet
Protecting the environment remains a priority. This pillar emphasises our efforts to reduce carbon emissions, minimise waste, and conserve resources across our operations. We are committed to transitioning to cleaner energy solutions and adopting practices contributing to a more sustainable planet.
3. Partnerships
Collaboration is key to driving meaningful change. It recognises that we won’t address global challenges like climate change or social inequality alone. We will highlight our engagement with suppliers, customers, and industry stakeholders to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions. By working together, we can amplify our impact and accelerate progress toward shared goals.
We strive for a highly coordinated approach across the Group to ensure that sustainability efforts are embedded in everything we do. Drive Change is a reflection of these efforts, and within each pillar are material topics that have been identified through a range of stakeholder engagements to ensure we are focused on the areas most relevant to our business and the communities we operate in.
Our sustainability activity continues to grow year on year with increased awareness and impact across the business. We are actively investing in alternative technologies, energy transition initiatives, and market innovations to support our goal of contributing to a cleaner, greener future. We have a suite of policies and procedures that support the implementation of the sustainability strategy, and we have systems and processes in place to keep our investors and stakeholders informed and comply with our legal and regulatory sustainability reporting obligations.
Net Zero refers to the balance of carbon (and other greenhouse gases) emitted into the atmosphere and the carbon removed from it. Applegreen group has a goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions (in scopes 1, 2, and 3) within our business by 2050. This is in line with regional government commitments and the 2015 Paris Agreement. To demonstrate this, we are are in the process of developing a Net Zero Transition Plan.
This plan and programme of work is no easy feat and to date we have undertaken a series of extensive business, regulatory, and peer analyses, alongside internal stakeholder engagement, to explore decarbonisation actions that are feasible, aligned with stakeholder expectations, and consistent with global climate goals such as the Paris Agreement and aligned with Science Based Targets.
We completed our first third‑party verification of Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as our first Scope 3 assessment in line with the GHG Protocol Standards.
Bringing our teams along this journey is critical to its success so we have also been enabling our teams with learning sessions and continue to focus on implementing energy efficiency projects across our operations. Like many businesses exposed to the volatility of energy, we continue to provide the best customer experience we can and doing that as efficiently as possible is our priority.
As the programme evolves, we remain committed to our ambitions and equipping our teams with the tools and guidance needed to succeed.
Our commitment to Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) remains strong, supported by an active D&I committee across the pillars of LGBTQ+, gender, social mobility, family and working parents, persons with disabilities, and cross‑cultural and ethnicity pillars.
We actively pursue priority actions outlined in our annual Gender Pay Gap Reports, investing in initiatives that develop female talent and support greater gender representation at all levels. Alongside this, we have a holistic wellbeing framework across the pillars of mind, body and environment. We support this by rolling out meaningful initiatives, resources and our Employee Assistance Programme, ensuring guidance is always accessible to our people.
We continuously strive for ways to invest in talent and capability of our colleagues through the our career pathway framework, the expansion of our learning management system across all regions, and the development of strategic learning offerings that strengthen compliance, management and leadership capability and internal mobility. We are intentional in shaping a supportive, inclusive and high‑performance culture, guided by annual engagement surveys and ongoing feedback.
We are committed to creating a workplace that’s informed, responsible, and up to date. It is mandatory that all Head Office employees complete our mandatory compliance training. We have an annual goal of maintaining at least an 85% completion rate each year, ensuring that everyone is equipped with the knowledge they need to work confidently and compliantly.
All training modules are available through our online learning platform, the Applegreen Academy (LMS). We regularly update the content to make sure it reflects the latest standards and best practices.
