when my perversions and childhood memories meet

am reading pluto by naoki urasawa upon charlesatan's recommendation, and i'm swiftly getting addicted. monster took me a while to get used to, but when i finally got in the groove, i was IN the GROOVE. now that i've been exposed to urasawa's style, i'm finding it easier to appreciate his treatment of this title. yep, he's still all shades of awesome. everyone should read ♥

before reading pluto, though, i caught up on the raw of the original tetsuwan atom chapter that inspired it - "the greatest robot on earth." now i remember several scenes from the anime of my childhood, but i'm surprised to realize i remember this one, since the synopsis wasn't at all familiar... i clearly remember pluto/bruton's horns frying the poor weaker robots; they get electrocuted and they go all wide-eyed with shock like humans getting fried, then they get torn apart.

see, nothing beats trauma as a means to inculcate yourself in the minds of the young, and anime is chock-full of that. tetsuwan atom - or astroboy, as it is better known outside of japan - is simply radiant with it.

astroboy also comes with a heck of a lot of moral lessons... perhaps it's too in-your-face for this generation, but it sure as hell made a lot of sense when i was a kid.

just as a bonus... though i really shouldn't be doing this. kills the anticipation, but what the hell. here are a few images from the scene that made me realize pluto was going to affect me seven ways to midnight. therefore i re-recommend it to all who can read this.

here, inspector gesicht tells a robot housewife that the remains of her robot mate have been discovered.
