Books 84 and 85 ✅ ✅ have arrived safely so I can share them here!! @dragonmuse is a wonder and it has been so fun playing with her words.

First, The Hottest Cold War, which went through 3 typeset iterations before I was happy with it. I loved how Scott and Ilya gave each other things throughout the story, and added them to the gutter design as chapters progressed. The headband is ombre with five colors to show the blend of the polycule coming together but still containing separate pairings. And of course the quote on the back that is breathtakingly beautiful.

Then, The Stairs Go Ever Down. Vee said it was intended to be a one shot and feel like the momentum was unstoppable, and I leaned in on that. I removed the chapter split ao3 insisted on and split the title across the gutter to bring that feeling of continuity (and because I’m weak for a gutter design 🤷‍♀️). But then I got really into the details - I drew 3 lines in affinity to wrap through the entire typeset including the front matter which I’ve never designed before!! I brought in one red thread to the headbands, and chose endpapers that had tiny streaks of red through the marbling. The cover design brought it all together blending the red string of fate with a crime board for our soulmate criminals. They did the crimes and I love them, your honor.

Thank you for sharing your stories with us, Vee!!!

I have indeed received these and I cannot tell you how much more gorgeous they are in person! The pushpin artwork jumps off the page and the suede/leather like feel on Hottest Cold War is giving me the best brain tingles. I can’t thank @sammialex enough for the incredible kindness of binding these and sending them to me. The artistry blows me away. The pictures are better than I can manage, but I will still append one so you can see them in hand, so to speak. because I can’t help myself.

Fittingly, the blurry background is chapter 5 of Brick by Brick (in progress and so far weighing in at 13k).

Change your win conditions question-

There’s been chatter and debate on threads (don’t judge) about the reason Ilya can’t have caffeine.

Some parties are insisting it is due to his “mood disorder”, presumably depression, and medication for same.

Others (a large amount of whom are depressed ADHDers who mainline caffeine and are shocked that it is contraindicated) either never gave it much thought or assumed it was due to Ilya’s nerve injury.

What says the author?

I do have an answer! I always knew why, but never found a satisfying place to put in the narrative.

There is some debate (seemingly, I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV, I just did a lot of googling and only read abstracts) if caffeine is good or bad for neuropathy pain. I settled on bad for Ilya, partially because it might increase any tremble that he had (just as a stimulant in general) and also exacerbate any anxiety he had which would in turn make the tremble worse. The bad feedback loop of him getting the shakes causing anxiety and in turn making things worse is what we see him trying short circuit before Shane ties his laces.

So basically, both camps are a little right.

Ilya resisted giving it up, but his doctor coaxed him into trying it for a month and unfortunately, he had immediate results (once the caffeine-deprivation headaches subsided).

One of the things I wanted to do was show that Ilya had made a lot of accommodations for himself that he doesn’t fully acknowledge. It wasn’t until Shane takes the narrative at the very end of the story that there’s a listing of the accommodations around Ilya’s home that never come up in his internal monologue. While he’s progressed a lot, Ilya will never be a perfectly reliable narrator.

….this might have been more of answer than you or Threads wanted, but here we are. Feel free to send follow ups Anon from you or other Threads folks. Always happy to answer!

Fic Posted: Venimus, Vidimus, Vicimus (A Win Conditions Story)

5k. Teen and up. Heated Rivalry. Shane/Ilya. Joey/Jackie/Hayden. Fabian/Ryan. Harris/Troy.

A countdown to the moment that makes the season.

Excerpt:

Tomorrow seemed a lifetime away. Tomorrow could be a thousand different things. Today was Milo picking up his little spoon and banging it against the tray.

“Da, da, da, da,” he said happily with each smack.

The tempo caught in Bood’s bones. He carried it with him for the rest of the day, tapping it against his thigh. Da. Da. Da. Da.

Back the WILD AND FULL OF MARVELS Kickstarter!

A banner with text that reads Wild and Full of Marvels Queer Fanworks Inspired by Folklore and Fairy Tales. Beside this is a book cover of a book with the same title as that text, with artwork showing two women, one a light skinned mermaid adjusting her hair and waving, the other a darker skinned fisherwoman exchanging a flirty look with the mermaid. In the upper right hand corner of the banner is a circular badge that says PROJECT WE LOVE KICKSTARTER, and the Duck Prints Press logo is in the lower left corner.ALT

The crowdfunding campaign for our next anthology, Wild and Full of Marvels: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Folklore and Fairy Tales, launched yesterday, and we’re already almost 50% funded and a Kickstarter “Project We Love”!

With Wild and Full of Marvels: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Folklore and Fairy Tales, our authors and artists bring our perspective as queer adults in the 21st century to the stories, some ancient, some modern, that meant the most to us when we were young. Each creator selected a folktale, fairy tale, myth, or legend that had personal significance for them, then reimagined these personal touch-stones as we wish they could be: stories that uphold our cultures, stories that impart the lessons and morals we wish to impart, stories that drive home the cautions we wish we’d received, stories in which people like us are the heroes held forth for emulation. We’ve transformed these stories to be more inclusive, more personal, more understanding of others, and—of course!—much more queer.

The book contains 23 stories, each up to 5,000 words long; 21 full-page artworks; a 4-page comic by Max Jason Peterson; and a 10-page comic by Jupiter V—a total of 46 queer fanworks inspired by stories from North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

In addition to the book, we’re offering awesome merch – two stickers, a bookmark, an art print, a slate coaster, an acrylic window hanging, an enamel pendant necklace, and a journal! There’s also a ton of add-ons you can choose from, from stories from our back catalog to Duck Prints Press merchandise and more.

Visit our campaign page TODAY to learn more about the anthology, our contributors, what we’re offering to backers, and our plans for getting this book into print with your help!

Absolutely loved your Svetlana pov chapter of Brick by Brick (thanks so much for sharing your writing!) and I was wondering if you had any favorite Svetlana fics to recommend? I’ve been collecting a few and would always appreciate more!

I haven’t read many that are Svetlana-centric! I wish I had some good links to offer you Anon. But I can poll the readers! Anyone got any recs to share? I’ll reblog this post with them.

I do have one funny one that I love where she’s a prominent character. It’s a textfic centered on all the POC characters in the show and slowly adds in an OC or two:

We are African Americans…… and Mark (Shane) by yamheadashcoops
