SIX teenagers were in custody today for questioning over the death of a father of three.
The 47-year-old victim, named as Garry Newlove, died yesterday following a confrontation with youths outside his home in Warrington, Cheshire, on Friday night.
The man confronted a gang of youths after they smashed the window of a mechanical digger which had been parked in his driveway.
He suffered a head injury and was taken to Warrington Hospital where he died yesterday afternoon.
Nine teenagers in total have been questioned and six remain in custody.
Chief Inspector Martin Cleworth, who is heading the investigation, said enquires were making good progress.
He added: "I would appeal to any young people who were present on Friday night to search their conscience and consider whether they know anything about the death of this father of three daughters."
A bunch of flowers were placed close to the spot where the man was attacked. The card read: "A true hero. Trying to take our street back. Standing up for what is right. God bless."
Outside the victim's home a man, who said he was the victim's nephew, said the family were making no comments.
Next to the victim's home is a railway bridge under which neighbours said the youths congregate.
Vera Flynn, 69, who has lived next to the bridge for 30 years, said: "The police came and asked me about it but I never saw anything, I don't leave my house after dark because of the gangs.
"The kids are always under the bridge messing about and if you say anything you get a mouthful.
"They are drinking, taking drugs, and I just don't want to leave my house because of it."
Mrs Flynn, who does not know the victim, added: "We got letters through the door asking us to start a Neighbourhood Watch scheme and somebody said it was this man who died who was starting it up.
"It's just dreadful the way society has become."
The devastated youngest daughter of a man beaten to death after a confrontation with youths has paid tribute to “the best dad anyone can wish for”.
The family of Garry Newlove, 47, tonight released a letter from his daughter Amy, who is aged about 12, written as he was fighting for his life in hospital.
The letter says: “I can’t get across how much I will miss you and I don’t know what I would do without you.
“You have always been there for me when I am down and you always put a smile on my face (even if it is a rubbish joke).
“You mean the world to me and I wouldn’t change you for the world.”
Walking out of the small shop complex that we have in our village. After Id been to work. I walked straight out of the automatic doors to go to the bus stop.
There were kids kicking a ball around near the windows by the door. Doing no harm. Two blokes were standing againts the wall leading towards the bus stop and another was on his feet moving around.
Typical skin heads, stripey jumpers. Staring everyone out. Including me as I walked passed him.
The ball the kids were kicking must have gone in their direction, and the bloke on his feet just pelted it back at them. About 2 feet away trying to hit them.
Then one of the lads on the wall made a comment about a bloke who just walked passed them looking like someone from coronation street (might have been me, I duno) and the bloke on his feet shouts "How queer" at top of his voice and they start laughing.
Then same bloke is making comments about killing those kids.
These werent 16 or 17 year old lads. These were like mid 20s to 30s blokes.
Pathetic.
was attacked earlier today by black chavs. smacked me round face. someone found my glasses. smacked again twice. had couple mates try to defend me. no provocation or anyway. was dressed like a 'goth'.
