Public posts versus friends locked

Originally posted March 9, 2006 - Reposted with a new date so it'll appear at the top of my LJ page for anyone who comes looking.

---

This will be the last public post you all see from me for a while, I'm going to start friends locking posts, so if you read my journal and are not on my friends list and want to keep reading it, and I know you, you should friend me and let me know.

I know that even friends locked posts aren't *private* as long it's on the internet, but there is that illusion of privacy.

I really didn't want to have to go friend's only, I had been hoping I wouldn't have to, but I am getting rather annoyed at random people reading my journal and commenting with comments intended to start drama. There is already too much drama on livejournal, I do not want to contribute to it.

I am also not going to be posting much in the line of personal stuff in the future so you wont be missing much anyway. I had started to open up to people about things in my personal life, but things have somewhat backfired on me and well, I think I'll go back to being a private person and pretty much keeping my opinions and life to myself again.
I may occasionally post a meme or photo publicly, but it will be nothing personal.

Just so you know, I tend to only friend back people I know personally or who I know through someone else's LJ, due to previous abuse. So if you friend me and I don't friend you back right away, don't feel slighted.

ETA: I will also check out a your LJ before friending you. I will read several entries back to find out a little about you. If you can't be bothered to use proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization in your LJ, then I can't be bothered to read it. (I do cut slack for those whose primary language is not English.) My spelling, grammar, etc, may not be perfect, but I try to write intelligently. I will not friend someone who uses a lot of abbreviated text speak, I find it difficult to read and will not read nor respond to posts or comments written that way.

On Voting...

Women were granted the right to vote in the United States in 1920 after 100 years of advocating for it.

The Fifteenth Amendment gave People of color, men only, the right to vote in 1870, women had to wait until 1920. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

But it was not until the Voting Rights Act of 1965, almost a century later, that the full promise of the Fifteenth Amendment was actually achieved in all states.

The American Indians who served during World War I returned home to a country that did not recognize them as citizens. They had fought for the country, but could not vote for the president.
The Indian Citizenship Act, passed in 1924, finally gave the indigenous peoples of the United States the right to vote. But not in all states. The last state to fully guarantee voting rights for Native people was Utah in 1962.

It doesn't matter if you think your vote will count or not.
It doesn't matter if you know your state always votes blue/red.

Our ancestors fought long and hard to get the right to be able to choose the people to represent them.

Find the time, GO VOTE.

Sad News

I am very sad to report that Marty Gear, Vampire Extraordinaire, Masquerade Emcee for many, many, Arisia Masquerades, Director of The Balticon Masquerade, passed away sometime last night. This is a huge loss for costume fandom.

Details are forthcoming regarding services etc.

RIP Marty.

Clean up time

On my Flist.

People who never post to their own LJ or as a comment are being pruned from my Friends List.

If you are still reading, and want to continue to stay, comment here. I'll screen comments so you can continue to be stealth if you so desire. Just let me know if you want to continue to be stealth so I don't resond and inadvertantly unscreen.

ETA: This is mostly for people I haven't heard from nor seen anything posted in their LJ's for a while now. People who seem to have dropped LJ completely. If you are still out there, posting and/or commenting, I wont be pruning you out.

Boil Water Order for Medford and other MWRA communities

PSA via ruthling and the evening news... (I know some folks I know don't watch the news or read the papers.)

Water service to all MWRA customer communities east of Weston has been interrupted by a major water pipe break in Weston. Due to this break, A BOIL WATER ORDER IS BEING ISSUED FOR DRINKING WATER FOR ALL MWRA COMMUNITIES EAST OF WESTON UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. In addition, emergency water conservation measures are being implemented for all impacted communities. A complete list of MWRA water communities is attached.

MWRA is activating its emergency water supplies such as the Sudbury Aqueduct, Chestnut Hill Reservoir and Spot Pond Reservoir. THIS WATER WILL NOT BE SUITABLE FOR DRINKING, but can be used for bathing, flushing and fire protection.

The leak is located at the location where the MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel meets the City Tunnel on Recreation Road. This 120-inch diameter pipe transports water to our communities east of Weston as far north as Wilmington and south to Stoughton. Water is leaking into the Charles River at rate of over 8 million gallons an hour. MWRA crews are on site; engineers are assessing the situation to determine next steps.

There will be a press availability with Governor Patrick, Boston Mayor Menino and MWRA Executive Director Laskey at MEMA Headquarters in Framingham at 4:30 pm.

Updates will be posted on Mass.gov and MWRA’s website at www.mwra.com throughout the event.

PS. If anyone needs an excuse to come out and visit us, you can fill your water jugs from our well. :)

Boston Red Line Alert

Avoid the Porter Square T station this afternoon if you can. A man was killed by a train and the station is closed down, they are busing people around the station. I suspect the investigation will drag into the evening commute.
