Social Fallacies
Been busy bein' productive lately. I've actually written something on my thesis! Even better I'm inspired to write more! Things are comin together with the project...I have about a month to write my thesis and so I'm sequestering myself for the duration. As opposed to my previous sequesterings this one so far is turning out well. I'm happier with my self which I feel is approaching a more full wholeness.
So anyhoo, I want this post to be about a neat little analysis I found...Five Geek social Fallacies. In short these are false assertions about how the social world is supposed to work as seen within geek culture. leaving aside the assertion that geeks have a subculture, i think these are neat. The five are:
1) Ostracizers are Evil.
2) Friends must accept me as I am
3) Friendship Uber Alles (before all)
4) Friendship should transfer across social groupings
5) [All] Friends do all things together.
If you want to read more about them then follow the link above.
So, what I find really neat about this thing is the idea that a person, subculture, other social grouping can have patently false ideas about how social relations work. These patently false ideas prevent the group from functioning at full capacity. If we actually developed an explicit interactional sociological awareness as part of subcultural membership then I think that we would be much more effective as people operating within groups. Already we do this a great deal within our own heads. the thing is that we don't make it explicit in our day-to-day lives, mostly 'cause we don't need to, to function.
This goes along with other notions of right/intentional living in which a person takes their life and critically examines each part for optimum functionality.
In other news, the Louisiana Legislature is prepating a bill SB 712 to further regulate the Sex Industry in the State of Louisiana. Currently it's in the SENATE COMMERCE, CONSUMER PROTECTION, & INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS committee. If passed this bill would do two major things for the New Orleans area: 1) Hamper expansion and concentration of sex industry stores (strip clubs, adult toy stores, porn shops, etc) to 1000 feet 2) Provide a lot of unnecesary building and set up codes for the internal layout of said buisinesses and 3) Provide an excuse for the police to bust strippers whenever they want. Hopefully it will stay in the Senate Committee. I was going to provide a cut with the bill but apparently 13 pages of senate billhood is just too much for one lj post.
