In a voice much like that of a whipped schoolboy, he said, "I wish I were not special. If I were only another Winchester, or even an Imperial, the Chinese would not want so much to take me away from you."

Laurence's heart broke to hear Temeraire say such a thing. He patted Temeraire's neck. "We will think of something, my dear."

"Laurence?"

"Yes?"

"Do you remember the story from China? About the man who swallowed a magical pearl and became a dragon?"

"And the dragon that swallowed one and became a man. Yes, I do."


The fact that this story exists at all amuses me to no end. The fact that it's so *great* fills me with glee. I thought the writer dealt with the scenario so beautifully, at turns funny and sweet. If you've read the first two Temeraire books then please give this story a go, and if you haven't read them then maybe you should give *them* a go:)
