Managing policies and features for GitHub Copilot in your enterprise

Control the availability of features for GitHub Copilot in your enterprise using policies.

Who can use this feature?

Enterprise owners

Copilot Enterprise or Copilot Business

When an organization owner assigns a Copilot license to a member of their organization, the availability of features and models is controlled by policies.

Defining policies for your enterprise

Enterprise owners can define a policy for the whole enterprise, or delegate the decision to individual organization owners. See GitHub Copilot policies to control availability of features and models.

  1. In the top-right corner of GitHub, click your profile picture.
  2. Depending on your environment, click Your enterprise, or click Your enterprises then click the enterprise you want to view.
  3. At the top of the page, click Policies.
  4. In the "Policies" section, click Copilot.
  5. If you see tabs at the top of the page, click the Policies or Models tab. If you don't see tabs, you will find the Copilot policies on the page you're on, or you can click the icon for models policies.
  6. For each policy you want to configure, click the dropdown menu and select an enforcement option. Select No policy to delegate the decision to individual organization owners. For more information, see Feature availability when GitHub Copilot policies conflict in organizations.

Note

The MCP servers in Copilot policy controls use where MCP server support is generally available (GA). This policy does not control access and permissions for the GitHub MCP server in third-party host applications (like Cursor, Windsurf or Claude). For more information on controlling access to the GitHub MCP server, see the Policies and Governance documentation in the GitHub MCP Server repository.

Opting in to previews or feedback

If your enterprise has a Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise plan and you enable "Copilot in GitHub.com" on the "Policies" tab, two additional options are displayed:

  • Opt in to user feedback collection: If enabled, users will see options to provide feedback on selected Copilot features.

  • Opt in to preview features: If enabled, users can test new Copilot features that are not yet generally available. Be aware that previews of features may have flaws, and the features may be changed or discontinued at any time. Current previews of Copilot features include:
