BIN Blocking

Overview

BIN blocking provides the ability to block transactions based on their Bank Identification Number (BIN) before they are sent to the acquiring bank for processing. By filtering transactions, you can proactively manage risk, reduce processing costs, and ensure your business remains compliant with regional or industry-specific regulations.

Unlike individual blocklisting, which targets specific data points like a single card number, BIN blocking allows for broad, rule-based restrictions across entire categories of payment methods.

Blocking Capabilities

Acquired allows you to apply blocks at various levels of granularity to suit your business requirements. You can restrict transactions based on:

  • Card Category: Block or allow cards based on their funding source, including Prepaid, Debit, Credit, or Charge cards.
  • Product Type: Segment by the intended use of the card, such as Consumer or Commercial/Corporate cards.
  • Issuing Country: Restrict transactions originating from specific geographic regions or countries to mitigate high-risk international fraud.
  • Issuing Bank: Block specific financial institutions if you identify patterns of high chargeback rates from a particular issuer.

Why use BIN Blocking?

By implementing BIN blocks, you can significantly improve your platform’s health and security:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance by restricting transactions from certain BINs associated with non-compliant entities or sanctioned regions.
  • Cost Management: Avoid processing fees for card types that your business does not support (e.g., preventing high-fee commercial cards if you only support consumer payments).
  • Risk Mitigation: Stop high-risk prepaid cards often used in trial abuse or fraudulent schemes before they reach the authorisation stage.
